Small Business Advertisers Like Facebook's Immediacy, But Not Its Metrics

A few days before the Facebook's IPO, General Motors pulled all its advertising from the platform, charging that it didn't work. At a conference in New York this week, execs from online eyewear retailer Warby Parker and luxe retailer Gilt Groupe voiced the same sentiment, charging that Facebook doesn't provide an atmosphere that's conducive to sales.

Not everyone is down on Facebook, though. Denise Sirovatka says she is pretty happy with the platform.

Since 2009, Sirovatka has been able to amass 900,000 fans for Udi's Gluten-Free Foods. Creating such a following would be impossible without Facebook, she acknowledges. "We cater to only one in 100 people," she says. "So we decided to build a community on Facebook to bring these people together. We took away the geographic boundaries."

Udi's is one of 7 million businesses with an active Facebook Page. Facebook doesn't break out stats for small business advertisers vs. blue-chip brands, but the company is putting more emphasis on such advertisers. In May, the company named Dan Levy, its former director of finance, to the title of director of small business solutions to help target the estimated 27.5 million small businesses in the U.S.

Udi's claims to get a fourfold return on investment for its Facebook ad spend and has seen a 30% redemption rate for product samples distributed via a Facebook app that it promoted with Facebook ads. But Sirovatka isn't completely satisfied with Facebook. "I think there are some holes in the metrics," she says. Chief among those: There's no way to measure real-time activity or to distinguish that the people who were engaging with the Page the day before aren't the same ones engaging with the Page the next day. "If there's a 20% engagement number, but it's always the same 20%, then that's a false number," she says.

Despite enjoying $500,000 in incremental sales over the past year directly attributable to Facebook, Mehdi Farsi, co-founder of State Bicycle, echoed her complaint. "Facebook still has a long way to go to compete with Google's pay-per-click," Farsi says, referring to both companies' analytics. Farsi says Facebook provides some data, but linking the activity to actual sales is a "vague correlation."

Both Farsi and Sirovatka also expressed frustration with Facebook's automated buying process as well. "If you want to buy a Sponsored Post, you have three to four budget options -- $200, $500, $1,000," Farsi says, adding that he'd like to have the option to buy at any rate he chooses.

While Facebook doesn't have any immediate plans to offer less rigid buying options, the company addressed concerns about its metrics last October. At that time, Facebook rolled out People Talking About This, which cataloged user activity related to a Page, including posting to a Page?s Wall, ?liking,? commenting, sharing a Page post or content on the Page, answering a Question posed to fans, mentioning a Page, ?liking? or sharing a deal, or checking in at at a Place.

However, the quality of data on Facebook still pales in comparison to Google, where you can track a consumer's journey from a search to clicking through an ad to actually buying a product. Michael Lazerow, CMO of Salesforce.com and founder of Buddy Media, says the Google comparison is unfair. "Google is the best business model in the history of business models," he says. Lazerow says Facebook is "closer to TV in how they're looking at media."

Levy, meanwhile, says he's aware of feedback from marketers like Farsi and Sirovatka. "We know that small businesses don't have a whole measurement team like large companies," he says. "We're trying to figure out faster ways to help them." While Levy says there's no way to identify new engaged users vs. old engaged users, he says linking Facebook marketing to sales can be done by providing a "whisper code" to fans can relay in-store to show they've seen a Facebook ad. Levy says Facebook Offers -- which let consumers cash in on deals they see on Facebook - also offers strong ROI tracking.

Marketers often find other crafty ways to track ROI. Patrick Ford, VP of Ford's Gourmet Foods, which is known for its Bone Suckin' Sauces, says he runs campaigns in different cities to see if there's any effect on sales. Ford also says he recently found the best proof of ROI possible: A customer photographed himself buying 16 bottles of the sauce after being directed to a retailer in Tampa, Fla., carrying the product.

In the near future, there will be other options. As of early September, large advertisers on Facebook can sync their customers' email addresses to Facebook users. For instance, if you give Ford your Gmail address and link that address to your Facebook account, then Ford can hit you with personalized Facebook advertising that reflects your place in the buying cycle. If you just bought a car, the ads will be maintenance reminders rather than pitches to buy new cars. Soon, small businesses will have the same tools, Levy says, perhaps making their Facebook advertising more CRM-focused than CTR-focused.

Offers and other new products, like Gifts, will also provide a better way to track ROI. Lazerow says Facebook is still very much a work in progress. "They're only seven years into it and really only four years of monetization," he says. "Just because you can't provide the ROI like [you can with] search doesn't mean you won't."

Iraqi officials say jailbreak assisted from inside

BAGHDAD (AP) ? Iraqi officials said Saturday that a jailbreak where al-Qaida-linked militants escaped death row had help from inside, further tarnishing state authority and raising new concerns over corruption.

A day after the escape in Tikrit, Saddam Hussein's hometown 130 kilometers (80 miles) north of Baghdad, scores of prisoners are still at large.

The Interior Ministry said there had been "clear collusion" between some guards and inmates in the Tasfirat prison. Weapons were brought in during family visits, and wardens left locks inside the facility open.

"The cells were not searched for a long period, which indicates more deliberate negligence that led to this incident," the ministry said in a statement released late Friday.

The escape occurred after a riot and firefight that left 20 dead, including 16 inmates and four guards, the statement said. After taking over a large part of the prison, rioters used other inmates as human shields in order to make their way out, it added. Of a total 303 prisoners, 102 escaped, including 47 al-Qaida-linked inmates awaiting execution. Some 23 were recaptured.

On Saturday, state television announced a reward for information leading to the arrest of the fugitives, and a curfew remained in force until the afternoon. Salahuddin provincial spokesman Mohammed al-Assi said "security forces have intensified efforts to hunt down those still on the run."

He refused to say how much the reward is for.

The incident generated sharp criticism for Iraqi security forces, who have been unable to stabilize the country almost a year after the withdrawal of U.S. troops. Several smaller escapes and attempted jailbreaks have already deeply embarrassed the government, which is eager to demonstrate it can run its justice and detention systems.

The Interior Ministry statement also said that Maj. Gen. Abdul-Karim al-Khazraji, the police chief of Salahuddin province where the jailbreak occurred, was fired.

Iraq has a poor track record of keeping inmates behind bars.

The Tikrit prison itself was moved to a different location after 16 prisoners, including five al-Qaida-linked inmates awaiting execution, made their escape after prying open the bars on a prison bathroom window with a pipe wrench in September 2009.

At the time, the entire prison staff and the provincial prison official were detained for questioning. Six of the escaped inmates were later captured.

And in southern city of Basra, a dozen detainees held on terrorism charges broke out of a prison in 2010, disguised in police uniforms. And last year, al-Qaida smuggled weapons and grenades into a prison in Mosul, supposedly one of the country's most secure detention centers, and attempted an ultimately unsuccessful jailbreak that left 17 dead.

In July 2011, detainees linked to al-Qaida escaped at least twice from a Baghdad area prison known as Camp Cropper shortly after the U.S. handed it over to Iraqi authorities.

Authorities earlier reported 12 people dead and 32 wounded in Friday's break in Tikrit.

Here Are The Singers Competing In Next Week?s ?American Idol For The Geek Set?

silicon valley voice logoEarlier this month, I wrote about Silicon Valley Voice, a karaoke competition for the tech world hosted by Silicon Valley Bank and Coverflow (a cover band made up of techies including Mayfield Fund's Tim Chang, Facebook's Ethan Beard, and Fandalism's Philip Kaplan). Now, the finalists have been selected, and you don't even have to wait until next week's event to hear them sing. Coverflow member (and Mayfield managing director) Raj Kapoor ?tells me that all of the regular tickets have sold out, with 800 RSVPs. But the organizers convinced Silicon Valley Bank to expand the budget, which means there's room for another 200 people.

RBS prices ?463m Isobel Finance today and places ?290m | CoStar ...

Royal Bank of Scotland has priced and placed ?290m of the outstanding ?463m Project Isobel debt this afternoon in the first European securitisation of a loan secured by a commercial property loan portfolio in almost six years.

RBS has securitised the outstanding balance of the original ?553m four-year loan extended to the special purpose vehicle which owns the underlying 37 commercial property balance sheet loans, which remains owned 75% by RBS and 25% by Blackstone.

The three-class Isobel Finance transaction comprises:

  • Class As: AAAs ? ?230m, with a weighted-average life of 1.48 years, paying a coupon of 255 basis points over three-month LIBOR;
  • Class Bs: AAs ? ?60m, with a weighted-average life of 1.79 years, paying a coupon of 425bps over three-month LIBOR;
  • Class Cs: BBB+ ? ?173m, with a weighted-average life of 1.88 years, paying a coupon of 450bps over three-month LIBOR.

Standard & Poor?s was the sole rating agency, while RBS acted as sole bookrunner and lead arranger.

The legal final maturity of Isobel Finance is 17 October 2038, an estimated six-year tail-period following the longest of the underlying Project Isobel?s 25-year dated interest rate swaps.

RBS placed all the AAAs and AAs, except for the 5% retention requirements under European Commission?s Capital Requirements Directive (CRD) regulations, with a small number of traditional CMBS bond buyers, dubbed ?real money investors?.

Separately, RBS today has listed ?340.9m in junior notes on the Channel Islands this afternoon, which is essentially RBS and Blackstone?s joint equity holding in the form of tradeable junior notes.

This puts Blackstone?s original equity at ?85.225m, while RBS? equity was ?255.675m.

In addition to the ?553m four-year senior loan, priced at 450 bps over three-month LIBOR with a one-year extension option, puts the original discount agreed for the Project Isobel loan portfolio at 34.3%, based on a price of ?893.9m against a nominal of ?1.36bn, according to CoStar News calculations.

The original LTV of RBS? loan-on-loan financing was 61.8%.

Together with the unplaced ?173m BBB+-rated class Cs, RBS has now structured the entire equity and debt capital stack providing the bank with flexibility to trade either the unmarketed bonds or divest some of its 75% equity stake.

RBS has no current plans to sell either but considers these options to be strategically useful for the remaining working out of the underlying loan and real estate portfolio.

Prior to the final closing of Project Isobel with Blackstone in December last year, RBS decided not to take-up third party financing because the bank believed that the 550 basis points margins quoted?was disproportionately high pricing for such an ultimately fast-amortising loan.

Lloyds Banking Group?s projects Royal and Harrogate, traded to Lone Star and Oaktree Capital Management respectively, are both financed by short-term loans priced around 600 bps over three-month LIBOR. ?Oaktree?s JPMorgan loan for Harrogate is thought to be less than 18 months.

The ?553m provided in stapled financing was priced at around 100 bps lower by RBS than could be achieved externally, with this lower cost of capital enabling superior returns to both itself and Blackstone.

It remains to be seen whether RBS? successful placing of ?290m worth of bonds secured by the Project Isobel sub and non-performing loan portfolio encourages a wider adoption of NPL securitisations in Europe, given an apparent trade-off between the lower cost of capital achieved with the time taken to close the partial capital markets exit.

The last securitisation of an NPL was Bluebonnet Finance in December 2006, which was of a ?2.8bn portfolio of former Hypo Real Estate German commercial and multifamily loans bought buy Lone Star?s Fund V in November 2004 with acquisition finance from Citigroup.

What Was CRG Doing For The Mets? - Amazin' Avenue

The Mets hired CRG Turnaround consultants over the winter. They claimed it was for internal reasons, but a source familiar with the situation sees it differently. So what were they doing?

As difficult as the current season may seem, the Mets have seen positive developments on and off the field this year. The young pitching looks exciting, and their owners settled their Bernie Madoff clawback suit. There are glimmers of hope on the horizon.

Take the story borne of one of the darkest moments of the year for the Mets -- the hiring of CRG turnaround consultants. At the time, Madoff trustee Irving Picard was breathing fire down the Wilpons' necks, the team had just lost money and suffered another year of declining attendance, and the fan base was unimpressed with the offseason crop of bargain-bin free agents. It looked like bankruptcy could, indeed, be part of the future, and so when the Mets claimed that CRG was just performing in-house streamlining, it was natural to question their motives.

And now the same source familiar with the situation that broke the news to me claims that CRG finished their work before the season -- and submitted an audit of the team to banks. Though this seems to fly in the face of the team's twitter-based claims, it's actually probably good news for the long-term financial viability of the team and the current ownership. It might be knowledge of the results of this audit that even fueled commissioner Bud Selig to offer his vote of confidence for the Wilpons and the finances of the Mets.

Companies in crisis often follow this sort of blueprint: Call in a heavy-hitting consultancy firm to come in from the outside; Perform an audit of the current state of business; Compare their information to internal systems; Incorporate their suggestions where necessary. It's fairly standard, and the hiring of CRG, and subsequent insistence that CRG was there for internal reasons -- those facts are consistent with such a turnaround plan.

What complicated matters was the current state of affairs in Queens and the past work of CRG. Things looked so dire because of the large numbers that the Wilpons supposedly owed in the Madoff case, and the fact that CRG had last performed the autopsy on the Rangers before helping with the bankruptcy sale there. It made sense to expect the worst.

But this tidbit from my source suggests that the information in the audit was deemed good enough to submit to banks. Once the audit is performed, the organization is free to use it as they see fit. Using the audits to begin the work on refinancing the loans that are due in the next few years could be a decision that the Mets made as an organization once they saw the results. Bankruptcy expert Douglas Furth agreed that "certainly, things look better for the ownership and the team these days."

But Furth counseled that it's hard to make any concrete assumptions from this. The process for refinancing and restructuring can be too similar. There's much we don't know.

My source acknowledged as much and added that CRG did not receive all the information it requested from the Wilpons about their personal finances. The most difficult aspect of this ongoing story has been separating the owners from their team situation -- owners are often expected to be able to support the team in lean times with their own infusions of cash, and even in a post-settlement world, the Wilpons have had to turn to outside investors to bridge gaps. Even though they settled with Picard and will even have some of their own clawback money coming back, they still owe him $162 million as of now, and that fact, along with the 12 minority shares that the team sold this year, suggests that the owners are not yet on solid financial footing themselves.

We know that the Mets lost $70 million in 2011. We know that attendance was down further in 2012. We know that we don't know the state of the owners' finances any better now than we did in March after Picard submitted his report. But now it looks like we know that, at least on some level, it's business as usual on the ground in Queens. They have debt coming to term, they've submitted an audit to banks, and it wouldn't be surprising to hear, sometime this offseason, that the team has refinanced their $430 million loan (now probably $320 million after a payment) that is due to come to term in 2014.

However you feel about current ownership, getting the team on solid financial footing has to be seen as a positive going forward. Add a couple well-timed free agents to this rapidly-developing rotation, and the Mets' fortunes could change quickly.

THE RACE: Politics infuse Obama, Romney speeches

President Barack Obama had an audience and megaphone that Republican challenger Mitt Romney could only envy: addressing an array of global leaders as the head of the world's largest economic and military power.

It doesn't get much more presidential-appearing than that.

Most U.S. chief executives come to enjoy their time upon the world stage, despite the ever-present laundry list of intractable problems.

They mostly don't have to worry about a contentious Congress and they can ignore, at least for a time, the roar from domestic critics? and turn instead to issues affecting all humankind.

On the other hand, the immediate audience is a group of foreign leaders who can't vote for you and have little influence over the course of American electoral politics.

But as Obama addressed the United Nations General Assembly on Tuesday, the U.S. election six weeks ahead loomed close ? both physically and thematically.

Romney, joking that "a few words from Bill Clinton can do a man a lot of good," spoke at a global forum also in New York sponsored by the former president, an active Obama supporter.

Obama dealt with foreign-policy issues that have cropped up in a U.S. campaign otherwise focused on the economy.

He denounced attacks on U.S. missions in Libya and elsewhere, but also the anti-Muslim video triggering them, calling it "cruel and disgusting" ? but constitutionally protected.

Obama said time for diplomacy to curb Iran's nuclear ambitions was running short and boasted of toughest-ever sanctions now in place, indirectly addressing Romney's charge he'd been lax on Iran.

He also denounced "those who turn their backs on the prospect of peace" between Israelis and Palestinians, a dig at Romney's expressions to donors doubting the Palestinian commitment to peace.

Obama later spoke to Clinton's forum while Romney headed to Ohio to join running mate Paul Ryan on a bus tour.

Using Web Analytics for PPC Optimization - Search Engine Watch ...

If you know anything at all about PPC, you know that campaign optimization is one of the most important tasks a PPC manager can perform. Managers spend most of their day tweaking bids, ad copy, campaign settings, networks, keywords, negative keywords, and many other data points within the PPC engines.

Campaign optimization is absolutely essential to PPC success. But if you?re spending all your time in the AdWords and Bing Ads interfaces, you?re missing a big part of the PPC optimization picture.

The Rest of the PPC Story

PPC metrics like CTR, conversion rate, cost per conversion, CPC, etc. are crucial elements that can?t be ignored. This data tells us what is happening with an account: how much traffic it?s generating, how many sales or leads it?s driving, and how much all of that cost. We get a great picture of what is happening.

The problem is, often we don?t know why.

That?s where web analytics come in. Web analytics tell us what PPC visitors did once they arrived at the website.

?Now wait a minute!? you might be thinking. ?I?m using AdWords conversion tracking, so I can see conversions! Don?t those happen on the website??

The answer is absolutely yes. And if you?re not tracking conversions via either the free PPC engine tracking scripts or a third-party tool, then shame on you.

But does that data tell you why someone converted? How many visits to the site did it take for that conversion to happen? What other pages did they view? Were they already a customer making a repeat purchase, or was this their first visit?

PPC conversion tracking can?t answer those questions. But web analytics can.

    Key Analytics Measures for PPC

Even the most rudimentary web analytics measures can tell us something about our PPC campaigns. The following metrics can be found in any web analytics program. I?ll focus on Google Analytics, because it?s so ubiquitous ? but you certainly don?t have to be using Google Analytics to get these numbers.

    Bounce Rate

Bounce rate is the percentage of site visitors who visited one page and then left the site.

    bounce-rate-paid-search

Usually, a high bounce rate is considered a bad thing. If you?re an ecommerce site, and 80 percent of your PPC visitors are bouncing, that?s not good ? it means that only 20 percent of people are bothering to go beyond the landing page.

But what if you?re using PPC to generate leads, and you have a lead form right on the page? Visitors could conceivably fill out the form and convert right there, without going to another page. In this case, it?s a low bounce rate that?s bad ? it means no one is converting!

As you look at bounce rate, think about your campaign goals, and what the numbers mean.

    Average Time on Site

Average time on site measures how long visitors spend on your website, in minutes.

    avg-visit-duration-paid-search

It probably takes at least 4-5 minutes to complete an online order on an ecommerce site, so if you?re an ecommerce PPC advertiser, a longer time on site is good.

What about the one-page lead form, though? Best practices for online lead forms indicate that shorter forms are best. If it takes 4-5 minutes to fill out your form, you?re using the wrong form. In this case, shorter times on site are a good thing!

    Number of Pages Visited

This metric is exactly what it sounds like: the average number of pages visited on your site.

    pages-per-visit-paid-search

Most ecommerce shopping carts are at least 4-5 pages. Add 1-2 pages for your landing page and any additional items the visitor might be interested in, and you?re looking at a good average of 5-7 pages per visit at a minimum.

I bet you know what I?m going to say here. For the one-page lead form, if your average number of pages visited is 5-7, you?ve probably lost the lead. An average of 1.5 is probably good in this case.

Are you seeing a pattern here? In order to accurately evaluate the meaning of web analytics metrics, it?s crucial to think about your PPC campaign goals. Good ecommerce metrics will be very different from good lead generation metrics.

    2 Final Caveats

As with all aggregated data sets, web analytics represent averages. And as we all know, averages lie.

While spending a lot of time analyzing what one or two visitors to your site did probably isn't efficient, it does pay to break your data out into segments. For now, just remember that averages may not tell the whole story.

On the flip side, watch out for outliers. Let?s say that your ecommerce campaigns have an average time on site of 7 minutes, but you have one campaign with an average time on site of 22 minutes. While on the surface that might sound good, it?s probably not ? in all likelihood, it means your poor site visitors are trying in vain to find something and aren?t succeeding. So if your underperforming campaign has outlier metrics like this, it?s probably time to optimize your conversion path a bit.

Now go take a look at your bounce rate, average time on site, and number of pages visited. You might be surprised at what you learn!

Also well known is his hatred of all things un-American. For instance, "vegan" bacon. Which, to be fair, is frankly wretched stuff.

Does Your Company Pay For Social Media Reviews?

Does Your Company Pay for Social Media Reviews?A recent survey from research firm Gartner estimates that by 2014, 10-15% of all reviews left by users on social media sites will be paid for by the companies themselves. While this isn?t a new phenomenon, companies may not see the potential downfalls of going overboard when it comes to paid social media interactions and reviews.

There is a right way and a wrong way to work with online users to generate content about a business in exchange for cash. For instance, working with well-trafficked bloggers on a paid review campaign that lets them give their honest feedback is a great way to generate buzz in the blogging community ? and it doesn?t come across as spammy or as trying to control users? online voices.

However, paying a ?social media agency? for online reviews, without knowing the people who are posting them or what they are going to say, can certainly blow up in a company?s face. A social media agency?that claims to get reviews ?from real people? and sells multiple reviews for a low price are most likely using fake accounts and leaving reviews that are generic, full of grammatical errors, and offer no genuine and helpful feedback for a company and other users.

    The Downfall Of Mass Reviews

It is much better for a company to take a chance that a high-quality, compensated user may leave a negative review rather than paying for fake positive reviews. This is even more the case when a company buys multiple ?reviews? from one person at a time, on a site like Fiverr.com or Yelp:

Avoid Paying For Reviews From Users Like This.

Social media sites (as well as the users themselves) can usually tell when reviews are fake and they respond appropriately (which can be disaster for a company). People don?t like it when online content (especially that which is posted on social media and review sites) isn?t real. They are trusting that reviews online are genuine because they are choosing to base their vacation, next meal, event, or product purchase on what others are saying online.

Lifehacker recently had an article about how to spot fake reviews. For instance, fake reviews usually mention the business name and use ?I? or ?me? a lot more often than genuine reviews.

The obvious point of social media is that all opinions are authentic and belong to real people, so fake profiles that write fake reviews jeopardize that. The?continuing?trend of paying for fake reviews not only brings down the quality of the content online but the also the quality of users, as more fake or mass profiles are created to keep up with the demand.

Paid Review And Content Trends Will Continue To Rise

While compensated reviews and social media content will always be present, once companies understand the true complications of mass fake reviews, it may be possible to work toward compensating users for content that is genuine.

The power is certainly in the hands of bloggers, social media users, and other online content creators. Companies must strive to produce real connections and relationships with these users instead of trying to falsely represent a good reputation. Trying to be sneaky online almost always leads to disaster.
