What the medals tally tells us about the G7 and BRICS

(Reuters) - During the Cold War, the relative power of the United States and the Soviet Union were regularly measured in gold, silver and bronze. The last couple of Olympic Summer Games have been a race between China and the United States, with America triumphing in Athens in 2004, and China, on home turf, overtaking its rival four years later. Many commentators saw that shift as a symbol of U.S. decline and of China's growing economic clout.

The 21st century is likely to be a multi-polar world, however. What does the medal tally say about shifting global power today?

One way to measure change is to compare the relative success of the Group of Seven, or G7, which is made up of seven rich, mostly western countries, and the BRICS, five fast-growing developing states.

Over the past four Summer Games, the G7 - Canada, France, Germany, Great Britain, Italy, Japan, and the United States - has kept its lead over the BRICS countries - Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa.

But the gap is narrowing. In 1996, the G7 won 38 percent of available gold medals, more than twice the BRICS share of 17 percent. In the 2008 games, the G7 won 32 percent compared to the BRICS' 26 percent.

There are several ways to measure medal success. As well as comparing gold medal share, we looked at each group's share of all medals by attributing three points for a gold medal, two for silver and one for bronze.

"A medal score like that is how you get a sense of the totality of achievement," said Simon Shibli, professor of sports management at Sheffield Hallam University. By looking at what Shibli calls "market share" you also account for the increase in the number of events.

A fair analysis can really only be made since 1996, when Russia started competing independently again. But by using the Soviet Union as a rough proxy for Russia, it is possible to get a comparison over a much longer period.

Reuters looked at the medal data going back to the first modern games in Athens in 1896 and found some interesting trends. Broadly speaking, you can divide the past 116 years into four main periods:

* The first half of the 20th century - in the Olympics, as in the real world - is a story of Western domination. That's not surprising. From the BRICS - the name wasn't coined until 2001 - only India and South Africa competed in the Olympics on any sort of regular basis.

* In the three decades after World War Two, the growing sporting power of the Soviet Union helped the BRICS to catch up with the G7. China's long boycott of the Games meant that, until 1980, the Soviet Union accounted for more than 95 percent of the BRICS' medal haul.

* Thanks to boycotts by the United States and then the Soviets, the 1980s were characterized by lots of static. Hard to tell too much here, though the top two countries are obvious: the USSR won 39 percent of all gold medals at the 1980 games in Moscow and the United States 37 percent in 1984 in Los Angeles.

* The last two decades are the first in which we see a straight race between the BRICS and the G7. The demise of the Soviet Union means Russia has been Russia again and China, which returned to the games in 1984 after a long absence, has taken the games much more seriously.

CHINA

The driving force behind the recent growth of the BRICS - as in the real world - is China, which overtook a slowly fading Russia in 2008 as the BRICS' top medal winner. China benefited from being host at the last Games but its growing dominance is also a result of the massive resources devoted to achieving Olympic glory, according to Shibli.

The country's performance in 1988, when it ranked 11th on the medals table, "was seen as a national humiliation," he said. "In 2008, China's one hundred medals represented the accumulated achievement of an estimated $8 billion of investment."

In pure market share, the BRICS' sporting prowess still lags behind its economic growth, according to John Hawksworth, chief economist at Price Waterhouse Coopers.

"The rise in BRICS' economic performance in terms of GDP isn't really evident in the same way in the Olympics data aside from China, which has risen sharply on both measures," he said. "Part of the reason is that India just doesn't feature. In India, they're cricket mad and hockey is the only Olympic sport where India has had consistent past success."

The Beijing games were the first in which India won more than one medal since 1952.

South Africa, too, "has a sporting culture but it is focused around sports such as football and cricket which are not in the Olympics," said Hawksworth. "So their share of medals isn't that high within the BRICS."

Brazil has won more medals over the past four Games, but its Olympic record still lags its economic growth. Brazil is now the world's sixth biggest economy but it has never come that high on the medals table.

The G7's share has declined slightly in recent decades, Hawksworth notes, but not as dramatically as their share of world GDP. The G7 countries and the United States in particular continue to dominate the Games; corporate sponsorship and the professionalization of sports have kept the standard of their competitors very high.

Olympic performance will never exactly mirror economic standings, of course.

Australia, which came fourth in the gold medal tally in its home summer games in 2000, is rich and sports-mad but is hardly threatening as the next global super power. Kenya and Ethiopia regularly rank high in the medal tables, but that has little to do with their economic station or political heft (poor, and relatively weak) and more to do with their incredible ability to fuse topography and genes into brilliant distance runners. Canada's economy is booming but it doesn't win as many medals as it did in the 1980s and ?90s.

Still, the table does tell us stories. When you sit down to watch your favorite Olympic sport over the next few weeks, enjoy the precision, ball skills and strength of the athletes. But watch out for the geo-political shifts as well.

    Ethiopian or Egyptian Team

The history of the Abyssinian Cat is confused; is it from Ethiopia or Egypt? Is it just a hybrid of a bunch of English cats? No one really knows.

But the Abyssian is well known for its energy and ability to jump, so clearly in the Olympics, this kitty would be a high jumper.

In Amharic (the most common language in Ethiopia) cats are called "demate". In Arabic, cats are "Qit."

This stately cat nearly died out during WWII, leaving just one breeding pair. Eventually the line was restored, and the Birman is THE cat in France.

In France, cats are "chat" and say, "Miaou."

As loyal friends that are less active than other cats, clearly the Birman is a skeet shooter.

This cat (who is named DROID, which is adorable) is very popular in Russia (and is frequently tattooed, alas).

How To Grow Your Network Marketing Business With An MLM eBook

Having a constant supply of MLM prospects is very important in network marketing. The most effective strategy to make money is to inform others on how effectively you are able to solve other people problems and, in turn, get people to come to your web site looking for more information. This advice is actually not found in any great MLM eBook no matter how hard you look, so it may be a different concept that what you?re used to hearing about.

Useful MLM eBook advice: Attracting More Prospects
First of all, it's important that you use the right tools to tap into a much larger audience than the people you will meet locally and in your warm market. The internet is a great tool here and that is why you need to learn how to use it properly. Using the internet changes the game. It allows you to connect with qualified prospects that you wouldn?t have had access to if you didn?t used the internet.

Useful MLM eBook? advice: Brand-standing yourself
Marketing and yourself on the internet while working on promoting your product benefits and how you can help people is going to help you a lot with gaining the exposure you need to make a difference.

You will see that the exposure you will eventually get will begin to expand faster and faster over time. In multi level marketing, what's important is that you get plenty of leads who will be in your downline and also have the chance to attract others to join you in your mission.

Useful MLM eBook advice: Attracting mlm prospects with attraction marketing
The majority of network marketers out there are just trying to market their mlm business opportunity.

This is important, but much less focus should be put on it. You need to concentrate on how you can solve people?s problems in a way that is relevant to what your product or service does, while on the back end, grow your business from the people who want to consume your products. People in your downline who buy every month is how you get paid every month.

Useful MLM eBook advice: People join people, not businesses
Focus on developing your personal brand based on the results you bring to people. It could be that you know a lot about making people look younger or you are very good with using green tea in order to treat various skin conditions. So, for example, you could come up with an MLM eBook called "The 10 secrets for looking younger that health professionals don't tell you" will certainly have a lot of success.

Then, you only need to put your content together in an MLM eBook. Just watch as your lead list grows. What's great is that those products will actually be your products.

If you use attraction marketing through branding and personal exposure using your MLM eBook as additional leverage, you will eventually be able to attract those people who want to work with you. People who think the same way as you do. Most individuals will not even care about your MLM business, but will join you because they resonate with your marketing and you. Everything's gets easier and simpler when people like you.

Your most important wealth building tool

I?m writing this from Terminal D of Houston?s Intercontinental airport so I?ll be brief. Brevity notwithstanding, the concept I want to talk about today will deeply affect your success with real estate investing.

Most aspiring real estate investors think that success in this business looks like a series of home runs. You know, you buy a house, flip it, double your money ? then rinse and repeat till you get to your desired number of millions. Or the other popular choice: Buy five dozen homes, leveraged to the neck, rent them and walk to your mailbox to collect your wheelbarrows of money.

What I want to share with you today is this: Real estate is where you come to put your capital to work not where you create your capital. You see, you already possess the most important wealth building tool. It?s your income. Think about that for a second. When put to work properly, your income provides the savings that become the capital you invest. In addition your income provides the support that allows you to leverage that capital and acquire a higher asset value than you would paying cash. And most importantly, your income helps you pay off your properties faster so you can retire sooner.

Knowing that your income is your most important wealth building tool is one thing. But realizing that how you choose to spend that income can make a difference between retiring a millionaire and working till you?re 90 is the very heart of my point. When you increase your overhead by taking on debt payments ? credit cards, cars, furniture etc ? you are impairing your ability to build wealth.

Look, I have a ?live and let live? kind of mentality. I won?t sit here and tell you how to live your life and how to spend your money. However, it?s important to understand that there?s a huge opportunity cost to debt payments. When you take on that $800 car payment, you aren?t just agreeing to pay that amount every month for 5 years. You are also forfeiting the wealth that that chunk of your income could build for you.

Success in real estate investing isn?t a series of home runs. It?s a well planned long series of hits. And the ?bat? you need to get those hits you already possess. It?s up to you how you use it.

Hot Real Estate Investment News This Week 2012-07-28

All the Real Estate News That?s Fit to RE-Print?

Welcome to our weekly edition of Hot Real Estate Investment News.

The big news this week: New home sales dropped to a five-month low, prices are up but could decline, foreclosures decreased again in June, but a new crop of foreclosures is coming.

Here are the real estate investing related news items that caught our attention this past week. We hope they help you stay up-to-date with your real estate investment strategies and inspire some profitable real estate deals for you.

Mark Lieberman reports from DSnews.com:

?New home sales fell to a five-month low, 350,000, in June, the Census Bureau and Department of Housing and Urban Development reported jointly Wednesday. Economists had expected sales to inch up slightly from the preliminary sales report in May. May sales were revised up to 382,000 from the originally reported 369,000.

The 8.4 percent month-month drop in sales was the steepest since sales fell 11.4 percent from January to February 2011.?

Esther Cho reports:

?For the first time since 2007, home values saw a year-over-year gain in the second quarter of 2012, according to the Zillow Home Value Index?.

Adding to the gain in values, foreclosures decreased again in June, with 5.8 out of every 10,000 homes counted as a foreclosure.

Foreclosures have been on the decline since January, when 7.9 out of every 10,000 homes were foreclosed on.?

More from Esther Cho:

home prices up

Home prices are up, but that doesn't necessarily mean they've hit bottom. We could still see home prices decline.

?Radar Logic?s composite to measure home prices may show monthly and yearly gains, but contrary to other reports, the analytics company argues that the increases don?t mean prices have hit bottom.

?Those people looking at current results and calling a bottom are being dangerously short-sighted,? said Michael Feder, Radar Logic?s CEO. ?Not only are the immediate signs inconclusive, but the broad dynamics are still quite scary. We think housing is still a short.??

CNBC Real Estate Reporter, Diane Olick, reports:

?Home prices rose, just barely, in the second quarter of this year annually for the first time since 2007, according to online real estate firm Zillow. That prompted the popular site to call a ?bottom? to home prices nationally. The increase was a mere 0.2 percent, but in today?s touch and go housing recovery, that was enough?.

?After four months with rising home values and increasingly positive forecast data, it seems clear that the country has hit a bottom in home values,? said Zillow Chief Economist Dr. Stan Humphries.?

RealtyTrac CEO, Brandon Moore appeared on CNBC?s Closing Bell Wednesday and shared his?insight on why properties already in foreclosure? only represent the tip of the iceberg when it comes to the potential housing market risk.

Key points:

  • Loans in the foreclosure process represented $45 billion in negative equity, which effectively equates to losses the banks backing those loans will have to absorb when they complete foreclosure or approve a short sale.
  • The much bigger pool of distress looming over the market is the 12.3 million loans with negative equity, or underwater, that have not yet started the foreclosure process.
  • RealtyTrac estimates that these underwater loans represent $1.2 trillion in negative equity ? an amount that is 26 times the negative equity associated with loans already in the foreclosure process.

Britain's FTSE extends gains on fresh stimulus hopes

LONDON July 27 (Reuters) - Britain's top share index pushed

higher on Friday, extending the previous session's strong gains

in tandem with leaps overnight on Wall Street and in Asia, on

hopes that central bank meetings next week will take steps to

help the struggling global economy.

At 0706 GMT, the FTSE 100 index was up 8.41 points,

or 0.2 percent, at 5,581.57, having jumped 1.4 percent on

Thursday after European Central Bank president Mario Draghi

pledged to do whatever was needed to preserve the euro, boosting

hopes for more decisive action in the single currency's debt

crisis.

Another crop of corporate earnings provided the main

direction early on.

Barclays was the top FTSE 100 gainer, up 4 percent,

after beating expectations with an underlying half-year profit

of more than 4 billion pounds. The British bank apologised for

an interest rate rigging scandal that has rocked it and the

banking industry in the past month.

Publishing group Pearson and miner Anglo American

were the top fallers, down 2.7 percent and 2.1 percent

respectively, as their updates disappointed.

Arkansas wildfire contained, Nebraska fires still raging

LITTLE ROCK, Arkansas (Reuters) - Residents of a western Arkansas town that was evacuated ahead of an approaching wildfire were allowed to go home on Thursday, as firefighters brought the blaze under control in the drought-ravaged area.

Officials said the wildfire that prompted Wednesday's evacuation of Ola, Arkansas, had consumed about 1,400 acres before it could be contained. Governor Mike Beebe planned to tour the area on Thursday.

Firefighters, meanwhile, continued to battle blazes in Nebraska, where three fires that have ripped across more than 72,400 acres were 50 percent contained, officials said Thursday. The largest is called the Fairfield Creek Fire.

Three minor injuries have been reported and 10 structures plus some outbuildings have been destroyed, officials said. Some 150 buildings were in danger of being burned.

There were 560 people working to fight the Nebraska fires, officials said Thursday.

"We currently have sufficient fire resources on the incident," Doug Fox, a regional emergency management director, said in a statement. "If additional resources are needed, local fire chiefs will put out a call for assistance."

Authorities said the Arkansas fire likely started when a mower contracted by the state hit a rock and sparked dry grass.

More than half of Arkansas' 75 counties are in a burn ban including Yell County, where Ola is located. The U.S. Drought Monitor reports that about one-third of Arkansas is in an exceptional drought, the most intense category.

US eases sanctions on Myanmar in rare difference with Aung San Suu Kyi

Last month, Aung San Suu Kyi?advised foreign companies not to invest in the state-run Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise until it became more accountable and open.

In what appeared to be a rare snub by American lawmakers for Myanmar parliamentarian and long-time detainee Aung San Suu Kyi, the United States on Wednesday gave a go-ahead for American businesses to invest in Myanmar's oil and gas sectors ? the largest easing of sanctions in the past 15 years.

?The United States is easing restrictions to allow US companies to responsibly do business in Burma," said President Obama, using the old name for Myanmar as Ms. Aung San Suu Kyi does.

Aung San Suu Kyi does support sanctions-lifting by Western countries and investment by Western business in keeping with the reforms undertaken by Myanmar's nominally-civilian government in office since March 2011. But she has expressed caution regarding the Myanmar state-run energy company, long regarded as a cesspit of corruption with tight links to the country's abusive military. Last month the National League for Democracy (NLD) parliamentarian warned that ?the Myanma Oil and Gas Enterprise (MOGE) ? with which all foreign participation in the energy sector takes place through joint venture arrangements, lacks both transparency and accountability at present.?

The US and some other Western governments have long taken their cue on Myanmar policy from Aung San Suu Kyi, but the Obama administration's decision on investment runs against that well-worn grain.

The US has likely taken what it sees as a pragmatic pro-business policy decision based on what it views as a combination meeting of strategic interests (countering China) and rewards as promised for the Myanmar government undertaking reforms.

The new US policy also allows American companies to bed down with MOGE, though they will be required to report annually to the State Department with evidence that their investments factor in workers' rights and the environment.

Reacting to the US announcement today, Aung San Suu Kyi told AFP that the move was ?nothing significant,? and wondered whether the US had sought some form of improved transparency from MOGE prior to the announcement.

Aung San Suu Kyi was recently-chided by the Myanmar government for continuing to call the country ?Burma,? the name of choice for opponents of Myanmar's military dictatorship, which issued a decree in 1989 changing the country's name from Burma to Myanmar in a move still controversial due to its arbitrary genesis.

The announcement came just hours after Ambassador Derek Mitchell took up post in Myanmar, the first American emissary to hold that position since 1990, when the NLD famously won a national election but was denied office by the military junta.

Flood in central Nigeria kills at least 35 people

(AP) ? Authorities in central Nigeria say a flood triggered by heavy rains killed at least 35 people.

Plateau state Red Cross chief Mnasseh Pampe said Monday several other Jos residents remain missing and rescue forces expect the death toll to rise further.

He says the flood waters washed away many homes in the area ? often built with mud ? leaving some 200 residents displaced.

Nigeria is currently experiencing its annual rainy season, which comes with torrential rains that challenge the country's infrastructure, often leading buildings to collapse and people to drown as many build houses in flood plains.

Voices from the past - Sport and Society

It wouldn?t be exaggerating at all to say that excitement is mounting exponentially here, in anticipation of the rapidly approaching Olympic Games. This morning saw the press launch of the Olympex exhibition at the British Library http://www.bl.uk/whatson/exhibitions/olympex2012/index.html which shows a fascinating collection of postage stamps, postcards and other memorabilia relating to the London Games of 1908, 1948 and 2012. Visitors can see a 2012 torch and torch-bearer?s uniform, numerous wonderful images & films from the vast collections of the IOC, listen to the recorded voices of British Olympians, and play with an amazing electronic version of the exhibition, the software for which has been developed by the Library itself. Outside on the piazza a booth where people can buy Olympic stamps and send cards is rapidly taking shape, and there?s a definite buzz, here and in St Pancras station, where numerous non accredited press representatives wearing large badges and heading purposefully towards Russell Square can be spotted round every corner. The celebrations almost seem to be taking on a life of their own, touching every aspect of London?s life. The athletic events seem like only one tiny part of it, and quite far away. However, the BL is now an official Olympic space, and we have the flag outside to prove it (solemnly raised at 1pm today)

The voices of the Olympians at Olympex are of particular interest to us because ? unlike the Olympex exhibits themselves which belong to private collections - they are drawn from the British Library?s own oral history archive. This resource, which is of enormous - and increasing - interest to researchers, covers a wide range of subjects from Jewish history and politics to the history of medicine and industry, and it also includes a number of recordings of sports people. These have been collected over the past twenty years and comprise interviews with track, field and road athletes as well as tennis players, fencers, canoeists and swimmers. Also included are unique interviews with those involved in the coaching of sport as well as those who witnessed historic sporting events such as the Berlin Olympics of 1936.

?The Olympians? accounts are fascinating: Dorothy Tyler, who won an Olympic silver medal in the high jump in 1948 speaks of her experiences then, and also in Berlin in 1936, when there were chaperones to ensure that moral decency was observed. Bill Roberts, who also went to Berlin to compete, sensed a threatening atmosphere at these Games?and speaks eloquently of the antipathy of the British team to the Nazi regime. What comes across in all of these accounts is how relatively unsophisticated the whole process was in those days: training for the Games was not centrally organised, and the athletes themselves bore many of the costs of competing. Dorothy Tyler explains that in 1948, at a time of austerity, competitors were housed wherever space could be found, often in army or air force barracks ? clearly, the Olympics of the immediate post war period led a remarkably hand-to-mouth existence. Hearing these things reminds us just how explosive - in terms of its organisation and?bureaucracy -?the development of the Olympic idea has been since those much simpler days.

?The good news is that these interviews, and many others, have now been put online on the Library?s website for everyone to hear.

NASA test of hypersonic inflatable heat shield a success (+video)

The mushroom-like Inflatable Re-entry Vehicle Experiment 3 performed as expected as it plunged through the Earth's atmosphere and splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean.?

NASA launched a novel new heat shield prototype on a successful test flight Monday (July 23), a mission that sent a high-tech space balloon streaking through Earth's atmosphere at hypersonic speeds of up Mach 10.

Animation to show the launch and deployment of the inflatable device and then the re-entry.

The test flight blasted off atop a suborbital rocket at 7:01 a.m. EDT (1101 GMT) from NASA's Wallops Flight Facility on Wallops Island, Va. It sent a small capsule, called the Inflatable Re-entry Vehicle Experiment 3 (IRVE-3) into suborbital space, which deployed the inflatable heat shield and then plunged back down through Earth's atmosphere to splash down in the Atlantic Ocean. ?

The mission, according to NASA, was an unqualified success and will help shape new re-entry systems for future spacecraft.

"It's great to see the initial results indicate we had a successful test of the hypersonic inflatable aerodynamic decelerator," said James Reuther, deputy director of NASA's Space Technology Program, in a statement. "This demonstration flight goes a long way toward showing the value of these technologies to serve as atmospheric entry heat shields for future space." [Photos: NASA's Inflatable Heat Shield Ideas for Spaceships]

The?IRVE-3 heat shield is a cone made up of inflatable rings that are wrapped in layers of high-tech thermal blankets to protect it (and its space capsule) from the searing heat of re-entry through Earth's atmosphere. The 680-pound (308-kg) heat shield prototype was packed inside a 22-inch wide (56-centimeter) nose cone for the test flight. It expanded to a heat shield 10 feet (3 meters) across during the flight.

During the test, which was overseen by ?NASA's Langley Research Center in Hampton, Va.,?the IRVE-3 heat shield launched into space atop a Black Brant 4 rocket and separated from the booster six minutes later about 280 miles (450 kilometers) above the Atlantic Ocean. IRVE-3 then inflated itself with nitrogen gas as expected, creating a mushroom-shaped heat shield known as an aeroshell.

Four cameras aboard the IRVE-3 prototype recorded the capsule's plunge back to Earth, proving that its inflatable heat shield successfully withstood scorching of about 1,000 degrees Fahrenheit (537 degrees Celsius) during re-entry at hypersonic speeds?of up to 6,000 mph (9,656 kph). The IRVE-3 heat shield splashed down in the Atlantic Ocean off the coast of North Carolina, where a high-speed U.S. Navy Stiletto boat crew was expected to retrieve it. From launch to splashdown, the entire spaceflight took about 20 minutes.

This isn't the first time NASA has launched an inflatable heat shield into space.

The first IRVE experiment launched in 2007, but failed due to a booster failure. In 2009, the space agency successfully flew the IRVE-2 inflatable heat shield. The IRVE-3 payload, however, is heavier than the IRVE-2 design, and was subjected to more extreme re-entry heating than its predecessor.

"A team of NASA engineers and technicians spent the last three years preparing for the IRVE-3 flight," said Lesa Roe, director of NASA's Langley Research Center. "We are pushing the boundaries with this flight. We look forward to future test launches of even bigger inflatable aeroshells."
