Bahamas helicopter crash kills American

By NBC News staff and wire services

NASSAU, Bahamas -- One American was killed and four people were injured when a helicopter crashed near an exclusive resort in the Bahamas on Thursday afternoon, according to local police.

The helicopter went down at Baker's Bay Golf and Ocean Club on Great Guana Cay in the Abacos island chain, according to Superintendent Noel Curry at the Marsh Harbour police station.

The Miami Herald identified one of the survivors as Jeffrey Soffer, head of the Miami-based Turnberry Associates, a leading property firm. Turnberry owns the famed but financially troubled Fontainebleau resort in Miami Beach as well as condominiums in Las Vegas, the Bahamas and Washington D.C.

The newspaper reported that, according to a Soffer family source, the person who died was the helicopter?s owner, a businessman who lived in the Bahamas, and the others on board were an unidentified woman, the pilot and a person who works with Soffer. They were headed to the Bahamas for Thanksgiving. Authorities did not identify any of the victims.

The Herald, citing the family source, said Soffer walked away from crash with bruises but no serious injuries.?The three passengers were flown back to the United States by private jet, Reuters reported.?The Herald reported that the Soffer family source said Soffer was taken to the University of Miami Hospital for evaluation.?

The helicopter was attempting to land when it was buffeted by a wind gust and the pilot lost control, according to the Nassau Guardian newspaper.

Eyewitnesses said the helicopter's rotor blades hit the ground near the Baker's Bay townhomes. The co-pilot was killed by the blades, and the pilot suffered serious injuries.

The Bahamian Minister of Transport and Aviation, Glenys Hanna-Martin, said a full investigation into the crash was being launched.

Baker's Bay is a luxury resort about 150 miles off Florida's southeast coast with an oceanfront golf course and private beach club, according to its website.

Far Cry 3 Review Round Up | Lazygamer .:: The Worlds Best Video ...

far_cry_3

Even though it lacks the superb feature of having mercenaries trying to kill you while shouting ?SKIET DIE BLIKSEM?, Far Cry 3 looks to be a solid contender for game of the year. The review scores are in, and they?re just one explosive collection of mental praise and insane love. Here?s a look at what the critics have to say while staring down the barrel of a gun while under the influence of some jungle hallucinogens.

The usually fussy Eurogamer gave the game an unprecedented perfect score, saying that

?Far Cry 3 is all the best things about open-world gaming. It?s a glorious anecdote factory, where you manufacture brilliant new memories every time you wake up in a safehouse and head out into the jungle.?

Kotaku, while not using a numbering system for their reviews, called it a blast, praising the fact that

?running up a winding mountain ridge before hang-gliding off. It never gets old.?

They also labelled the game as

?an example of the rare ambitious, big-budget game that accomplishes exactly what it sets out to do?chaotic yet controlled, with a brilliantly-balanced mechanical ecosystem that challenges and empowers at every turn.?

Gametrailers gave the game the lowest score so far, even though that itself was an impressive 8.6, saying that

?the co-op and competitive multiplayer components stand as comparative low points, but chances are you?ll be so busy trekking through this vast island that you?ll likely write them off as just another symptom of jungle sickness.?

Looks like Far Cry 3 might be the jungle boogie game of the year. Expect our own review on it soon, when the game releases on multiple platforms on November 30.

Going Green When It Comes To Computers And Technology

Do you know where your computer was last night at 11:30pm? Do you know what it was doing? Chances are it was left on and doing absolutely nothing. It is difficult to say what the average computer and computer monitor draws in energy. There are a wide variety of computers and the way they are used varies even more. In my experience, and taking the mean average of all the finding I have come across, let us pretend that the average computer uses 147 watts. The computer I am currently typing on is consuming about 230 watts with a 750 watt power supply and two 22" LCD monitors, but using a word processing program does not tax the machine. If I were to start editing video or playing a newer video game my draw would jump to over 300 watts since all of the components would be in full use. Enough of that statistical data, let's bring on the math.

(Watts x Hours Used) / 1000 x Cost per kilowatt = Total Cost
Now if you have the 147 watt computer on 24/7/365 you would spend about $167 a year at $0.13/kw. That does not look too bad. Now think of a corporate office with about 100 employees on site. Still not bad? Now think of the world. It would be hard to state what the carbon footprint would be at since there are multiple resources used in creating electricity, but each of us can do our part.

Here at Credo Computer Repair and Services we train all of our clients in using less power when it comes to their computers and other pieces of technology. We set up all computers to go into standby (sleep), power the hard disk drives down and blank the monitors (screen savers are power drainers!). The other key idea that we try to ingrain is to shut the computer and the monitor completely off when you know you are going to be away from your computer for more than 24 hours. We have been building shoebox sized computers for use as a Windows Home Server (great for small offices as well) that only consume 35 watts, they also work great for those that only surf the Internet, e-mail and use productivity software like Microsoft Office. With one of these small computers and a 19" LCD monitor you will consume less than 75 watts of power. The cost of these small computers are also less, and capable of paying for themselves.

When it comes to saving electricity and the planet the majority of us already know about compact fluorescent light bulbs (change your night lights to LEDs!), and that we should seal up our homes from air leaks, not run the A/C too cold or the furnace too hot, we should plan our driving and not waste fuel, and that we should recycle plastic bottle and aluminum cans. So what is your next step? How about making sure that your new purchases are environmentally friendly? And make sure that you recycle your computers and electronics properly and responsibly, they do not belong in the trash. Contact your local dump or search the phonebook or Internet for an electronics recycling center in your area. If you have electronics that are working you can donate them via Freecycle, which is a Yahoo Group with individual groups based on regions that post things that they want to give away. The other thing you can do with working computers is donate them, there is no tax write-off for a depreciated computer but there is the sense that you are helping out those less fortunate. We, at Credo Computers, accept any working computer and we never resell them, we install a free Linux distribution called Ubuntu and donate them to those in need (individuals and non-profits).

Search Challenge: A thousand years of Thanksgiving?

Search Challenge: A thousand years of Thanksgiving?Daniel Russell knows how to find the answers to questions you can't get to with a simple Google query. In his weekly Search Research column, Russell issues a search challenge, then follows up later in the week with his solution?using whatever search technology and methodology fits the bill.

As you know, Thanksgiving has a long tradition in the United States. (See our earlier SearchResearch question on about traditional cranberry recipes from 2010.)

In the US, we've ritually celebrated Thanksgiving annually since 1621 when the Pilgrims first sat down to celebrate a more-or-less successful harvest. There were occasional "Thanksgiving" celebrations before that, but It's been an official holiday since 1863 when President Abraham Lincoln proclaimed a national day of "Thanksgiving and Praise to our beneficent Father who dwelleth in the Heavens."

But other countries have much longer-standing festivals of harvest celebrations.

So here's a search challenge question to contemplate this Thanksgiving season:

Can you find another country that has celebrated a annual Thanksgiving festival in November more-or-less continually for at least the past 1000 years? If so, what's the name of that festival?

As you know, we ritually consume turkey, cranberries, pumpkins, and potatoes. For extra credit:

What food is ritually consumed is this other country's long-lasting Thanksgiving celebration?

For triple credit:

What's the traditional reason that particular food is eaten?

When you send in your answer, let us know about how long it took you to find the answer and what your research process was. My answer will be posted tomorrow!

Marketing With Email: How To Use It To Make More ... - Businesses

Marketing is an essential component to any successful business, but some companies fail to capitalize on all of the marketing tools available to increase profits. One very effective marketing tool that can be neglected is a well-designed e-mail marketing campaign. This article contains some tips and advice to help you better utilize the power of email to market your business.

Branding your business is essential, and it should be incorporated in your e-mail marketing endeavors, as well. Because of this, you should design a template which lets you incorporate the company colors, logo, and other special fonts that are on your site. This will allow your emails to be recognized instantly.

Be ethical, and send your marketing emails only to those who have provided their permission for you to contact them this way. Sending messages to individuals who are not interested will cause them to block your emails. If several people report your emails as spam, your email provider may suspend or close your account for violating the terms of service.

TIP! After a customer makes a purchase, offer them a coupon good on their next visit in your thank you email. Use a link they can click on to see what the offer is.

Mix up the format of your emails every once in awhile to keep things interesting. HTML is not the only way to convey your message, and an occasional plain text email can grab your customers attention. If you use well-written text, this type of a message can have an intimate feel, which will often make your customers view you in a more personal and trusting way.

Closely monitor the marketing with email campaigns of competitors. This can be done simply by becoming a subscriber to their email list. You should study their techniques and do your best to develop better campaigns. Always try to find areas in which they are not meeting the needs of their customers, so you can try to fulfill those needs. If they have promotions going on, create better promotions than theirs.

Marketing your products successfully becomes easier with an effective email marketing plan. By getting in touch with your customers in a personal way like email, you strengthen the bond between them and your business. Watch your income increase by applying the tips in the above article.

TIP! Double, triple and even quadruple check your emails before you press send. Many people forget this step, which is unfortunate.

Putin says Russia's economy to suffer from WTO entry

MOSCOW (Reuters) - Russia's energy-based economy will take a serious blow from membership of the WTO coupled with a global slowdown, President Vladimir Putin warned on Wednesday, singling out the most vulnerable sectors of the $1.9 trillion economy.

Higher unemployment and budget revenue shortfalls were likely to result from moves to cut some import duties to comply with WTO rules, Putin said, making domestically produced goods less attractive to cash-strapped consumers and businesses.

"We should understand that the initial period in WTO will require a serious adjustment of our economy," Putin told his Security Council convened to discuss risks posed to national security by the World Trade Organization membership.

Russia's domestic animal farming, agricultural machinery, medical equipment, automotive, pharmaceutical, textile and food sectors were particularly at risk, he said.

"Because of the negative trends in the global economy, the risks linked to Russia's WTO obligations have grown," he said.

Russia joined the global trade club in August after 18-year negotiations. Putin said entry talks were helped by the global economic crisis which made developed economies more willing to make concessions in order to gain access to new markets.

The president said Russia's so-called mono-cities, where at least 25 percent of the economically active population work at a single enterprise, were particularly threatened by measures resulting from the country's WTO membership.

About 15 percent of the 143 million population live in about 300 mono-cities, a heritage of the Soviet planned economy.

Such cities are potential hotbeds for social unrest and during the 2008-09 economic crisis the government spent lavishly and sometimes applied political pressure on owners trying to keep the enterprises they were built around afloat.

However, overall WTO membership remained positive for the country's economy, said Putin, who did not question any of Russia's WTO obligations and added Russia should defend its interests in the organization.

Putin, whose health has recently been under close scrutiny amid reduced appearances and canceled foreign trips, stuttered during his speech saying "Russia will always lag behind" instead of "Russia will always defend its interests", mixing two similar Russian words.

NORMAL RELATIONS NECESSARY

The Council Secretary Nikolai Patrushev also told reporters on Wednesday a U.S. bill, known publicly as the "Magnitsky list", was also discussed at the meeting but noted it would not threaten Russia's national security.

The bill would require the names of people believed involved in the death of Sergei Magnitsky, a lawyer for equity fund Hermitage Capital who died in jail in 2009, are published, their U.S. visa applications denied and assets frozen.

Patrushev said the U.S. needed normal trade relations with Russia "for its own sake" while the bill was dictated by the U.S. domestic political agenda. He warned that Russia had "something to respond with" in case the bill was passed.

Government sources say Moscow is also getting ready to contest European Union energy rules, known as the Third Energy Package, which restrict Russian gas giant Gazprom's control over its European pipeline assets.

The EU, Russia's largest trade partner, has criticized Russia's plans to levy scrappage fees on imported vehicles and a ban on European live animal imports. The dispute has affected work on the Russia-EU framework agreement.
