Five years after starting, the share of mining companies remaining alive is nearly 15 percentage points higher than the fraction of construction businesses still in operation (52.3 percent versus 36.4 percent).

In the figure above, I have plotted the five year survival rates for new companies founded in 2005 using data from the Census Bureau?s Business Dynamics Statistics.

While there are many sources of data on start-up failure rates, these are probably the best. They come from a longitudinal database of businesses that government economists and statisticians created by linking together annual administrative records, such as unemployment insurance filings. (The use of administrative records eliminates errors that emerge from efforts to survey company owners.)

Because the database was designed for researchers, the data are not presented in the most user friendly way. Therefore, I have reorganized them into a chart which shows the survival rates by industry sector.

As you can see, the odds that a new business survives its early years vary a lot by sector. In order from highest to lowest five year survival rates, the sectors are:

• mining (51.3 percent)
• manufacturing (48.4 percent)
• services (47.6 percent)
• wholesaling and agriculture (47.4 percent)
• retailing (41.1 percent)
• finance,?insurance, and real estate (39.6 percent)
• transportation, communications and utilities (39.4 percent)
• construction (36.4 percent)

Cell death discovery suggests new ways to protect female fertility

ScienceDaily (Sep. 21, 2012) ? Melbourne researchers have identified a new way of protecting female fertility, offering hope to women whose fertility may be compromised by the side-effects of cancer therapy or by premature menopause.

The researchers, from the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute, Monash University and Prince Henry's Institute of Medical Research, made the discovery while investigating how egg cells die.

They found that two specific proteins, called PUMA and NOXA, cause the death of egg cells in the ovaries. The finding may lead to new strategies that protect women's fertility by blocking the activity of these two proteins.

Associate Professor Clare Scott from the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute said the research showed that when the DNA of egg cells is damaged following exposure to radiation or chemotherapy, such as that received during some cancer treatments, PUMA and NOXA trigger the death of the damaged eggs. This egg cell death causes many female cancer patients to become infertile.

"PUMA and NOXA can trigger cell death, and have been found to be necessary for the death of many different cell types in response to DNA damage," Associate Professor Scott, who is also an oncologist at The Royal Melbourne and Royal Women's Hospitals, said. "This removal of damaged cells is a natural process that is essential to maintaining health but, for women undergoing cancer treatment, can be devastating when it leads to infertility."

Associate Professor Scott, Dr Ewa Michalak and Professor Andreas Strasser from the Walter and Eliza Hall Institute, together with Associate Professor Jeffrey Kerr from Monash University, and Dr Karla Hutt and Professor Jock Findlay from Prince Henry's Institute of Medical Research, focused their studies on egg cells called primordial follicle oocytes, which provide each woman's lifetime supply of eggs. Low numbers of these egg cells can also be a cause of early menopause. Their findings are published online this week in the journal Molecular Cell.

Associate Professor Jeff Kerr said that when these egg-producing cells were missing the PUMA protein, they did not die after being exposed to radiation therapy. "This might ordinarily be cause for concern because you want damaged egg cells to die so as not to produce abnormal offspring," he said. "To our great surprise we found that not only did the cells survive being irradiated, they were able to repair the DNA damage they had sustained and could be ovulated and fertilized, producing healthy offspring. When the cells were also missing the NOXA protein, there was even better protection against radiation."

"We were very excited to see healthy offspring could be produced from these cells," Associate Professor Scott said. "It means that in the future, medications that block the function of PUMA could be used to stop the death of egg cells in patients undergoing chemotherapy or radiotherapy. Our results suggest that this could maintain the fertility of these patients."

A joint leader of the study, Professor Jock Findlay, head of the Female Reproductive Biology Group at Prince Henry's Institute, said the study could also have implications for delaying menopause. "We know that the timing of menopause is influenced by how many egg cells a female has," he said. "Interventions that slow the loss of egg cells from the ovaries could delay premature menopause. As well as prolonging female fertility, such a treatment could have the potential to reduce menopause-associated health conditions, such as osteoporosis and heart disease."

The research was supported by National Health and Medical Research Council, Cancer Council Victoria, the Victorian Cancer Agency, the US Leukemia and Lymphoma Society, the US National Cancer Institute, the American Cancer Society, and the Victorian Government.

The Real Housewives of Miami Recap: Text, Lies, and Your Smile Is Fake

The Real Housewives of Miami are back with "Text, Lies, and Your Smile Is Fake." We recap the odd confrontations, commitment issues, and pirate ships in THG's +/- review.

Well, fake smiles hardly seem like an issue when so many other body parts are fake on the Housewives of Miami but we'll skip over that and head right to our update.

Elsa survived her collapse at the Food and Wine festival.  She was sent home from the hospital with a clean bill of health.  Plus 7.  Her only concern was whether she looked like a lady when she hit the floor.

Adriana drops in for a visit and Elsa gives her an opinion on her relationship with Frederic.  Frederic loves her more than she loves him and Adriana's still so scarred from her first marriage that she's not ready to get married.

Plus 10 because whether it's her psychic abilities or old fashioned common sense, Elsa is spot on.

Elsa's advice however leaves something to be desired.  She tells Adriana to put her head on the right pillow and that's the one that's full of money.  Minus 8.  Money helps but it won't keep you from getting your heart crushed.

Later Frederic tells her he wants to marry her now but he's willing to wait. He really seems to love her. Adriana says she wants to wait until the boat is finished. 

Minus 10 because I don't think she'll ever move onto the boat.  Not enough closet space and at some point, Frederic may get tired of waiting. 

Lisa goes yacht accessory shopping with Frederic and Adriana.  She thinks Frederic's antique yacht is the equivalent of a pirate ship.  Plus 9.  I'm not sure she's wrong.

Lisa has her own issues.  Lenny's got an office full of sexy photos of women baring their breasts.  Of course he is the Boob God of plastic surgeons so perhaps he has an excuse.

To counter the well endowed photos, Lisa puts up their wedding picture.  Minus 8.  Good luck with that. It's just one more buxom photo to the mix.

Over at Joanna's, Marta and Romain are getting a little too close for comfort.  Especially once Marta walks in on Romain about to take a shower.  Hearing Marta's detailed description of Romain's "nasty penis,"  Minus 20  No one needs to hear that.

Marta needs to get out of their home and give Romain and Joanna some time alone. 

Joanna's pushing for a wedding date but she doesn't sound all that convinced.  Romain sounds ticked that Joanna's kept him waiting for five years.  Minus 10.  I'm no Elsa but I don't predict a happy ending for this couple.

Where some couples can't get together, others have trouble calling it quits.  Ana and her husband have been separated for over two years.  It's time to sign the papers and move on.  Minus 8. Ana can't seem to let go.

But Ana's got other issues.  I can't believe Adriana dragged Karent over to talk to Ana about the texts. Shouldn't that have been Ana or Karent's choice. Minus 12 for just increasing the drama.

Really, does anyone think Rodolfo's faithful to Karent, except maybe Karent?  If Ana wants to avoid any further trouble then perhaps she should block Rodolfo's number and end all of this nonsense. 

Then again, what fun would that be?
