Vancity vs Enbridge ? The Business Ethics Blog

It was recently reported that Vancity Investment Management is divesting its shares in beleaguered Canadian oil company, Enbridge.

Enbridge has made the news repeatedly over the last few years because of leaks in its pipelines. Not unrelatedly, the company has faced opposition from native and environmental groups with regard to its planned pipeline across northern Alberta and British Columbia. The combination of errors in its past and risks in its future is apparently just too much for Vancity, and perhaps for other socially- and environmentally-conscious investors.

This new announcement is, on the surface at least, a good example of the connection between ethics and business. It is often pointed out that, in order to stay in business, a company needs to maintain its ?social license to operate.? But more specifically it needs to retain the goodwill of key stakeholders, and investors are very high on that list.

But of course, investors can turn on a company for all kinds of reasons; the perception that the company isn?t doing well socially or environmentally (or more generally, ethically) is just one. Companies can take a hit to their shares for any number of reasons. Even if we limit ourselves to broadly ?social? reasons, there are good and bad reasons, reasons about which there is broad social consensus (e.g., child labour) and ones that are socially divisive (e.g., contributions to pro-choice or anti-abortion groups). And so on.

This points to an interesting question about the obligation that managers and boards have to manage risk. It is increasingly clear that the obligation to manage risk includes not just financial risk, but just about any risk to which the company might be subject. That includes environmental risks and reputational risks. Understandably, the two are intertwined. According to the story cited above, one ?ethical investment? company (Northwest & Ethical Investments LP) has expressed concern about Enbridge not (just?) because of the risks its pipeline poses, but because of the risk posed by opposition.

Should Enbridge (and its shareholders) be concerned about the Vancity divestment? That?s unclear. The divestment itself doesn?t sound catastrophic, but things could change if other investors follow suit. How likely that might be is also unclear. The interesting question is which kind of worry is more likely contagious: worries over environmental risks (and financial risks that go with those) or worries over risks of opposition.

In the end, it may not matter much. As I?ve argued before, oil companies need to do a better job of managing environmental risks. If they can succeed at that, they may well see the risks of social opposition melt away at the same time.

Total Vibration ? Blog Archive ? Several Ways To Get Your Financial ...

Finances can be scary, but money is a daily essential. This article contains advice which will help you to regain control of your finances.

Plan your budget based on what you spend vs. how much you make. It is important to figure out your income after taxes. Make sure you include all forms of income that you receive, whether they are from rental properties or a second job. Your expenses should be less than your income.

After that, you need to write down all of your household expenses in list form. Take the time to include everything, such as car maintenance, food costs and amounts you spend when you head out for a night. Make sure that this list reflects all of the money you spend.

Be sure to use real numbers when making a budget. You will find that you have unneeded expenses that you can probably eliminate. Simple things like bringing your own coffee from home can make a huge difference.

To decrease your utility bills, upgrade the systems that you are using. You can cut the cost of your power bill by updating your windows or replacing your hot water heater. A hot water heater can also make a difference in your bill. To lower a water bill, check for any leaky pipes, and have a plumber come out and fix any that you find. Be sure to only use your dishwasher when it is full.

Swap old, inefficient appliances for those that use less energy. This may seem costly, but it saves money over time. Unplug the electrical cords from any appliances or electronics that are not being used. Over time, you will see a difference in utility costs.

To make sure that you are not losing heat because of your roof or insulation, upgrade these areas, especially if this is something that you have not done in a long time. You will definitely get a return for your investment with this upgrade.

When you use these tips, you will be able to cut down on your expenses and save more money. Spend the money you have saved on home improvement projects on new appliances you need. You will be able to live more comfortably and make better plans for the future.

Bionic suit helps Paralympic ski racer 'ReWalk' for the first time in ...

Jane Sowerby 4 Bionic suit helps Paralympic ski racer ‘ReWalk’ for the first time in nine years Jane Sowerby, a 37 year-old Paralympic ski racer from Bedfordshire, who was left paralysed from the waist down after a fall in 2003, has walked for the first time in nine years thanks to an exoskeleton mobility system supplied by leading East Yorkshire-based mobility solutions provider, Cyclone Technologies.

Keen to rebuild her life and regain her independence after the accident, Jane began skiing in 2005, before embarking upon a Paralympic ski racing career which saw her scoop several medals and join Team GB for the 2010 Winter Olympics in Vancouver.

In 2011, she approached Cyclone Technologies in a bid to improve her general health, circulation and range of motion by using the company?s specialist Functional Electrical Stimulation (FES) cycling therapy. After working with Cyclone for around a year, Jane received a call from the company?s founder, Stuart Dunne, who told her about a new alternative mobility solution to the wheelchair, ReWalk.

After only four days of training, Jane is now able to stand, ascend and descend stairs and walk indoors and outdoors on mown grass, ramps and up curbs. The ReWalk has provided Jane with a level of independence that she never thought possible, as she explains?

?The ReWalk is fantastic, and it?s such an amazing feeling to be standing for the first time in five years, and walking for the first time in nine years. Recently, I?ve had a number of hip problems, meaning that I stayed away from using support bars to help me stand, but the ReWalk provides me with all the support and balance I need to get around comfortably. ReWalk has already given me more independence than I could have imagined, and it feels incredible to be so tall!

?After experiencing a number of injuries in recent years, I am moving away from ski racing and focusing on instructing new racers. I really see this, along with my progress with the ReWalk, as the next step in my life and I couldn?t be happier.?

Dave Hawkins, Managing Director at Cyclone Technologies, said:

?The ReWalk has already made a massive difference in people?s lives, and we?re so pleased to be providing and training people to use a product which can help individuals with lower-limb disabilities improve their health and fitness levels, and regain their independence.

?With her incredible drive, courage and determination to succeed, Jane has made some fantastic progress already and we?re thrilled to see how much she?s enjoying her training. It?s really inspiring to work with people like Jane, who are living proof that enjoying an active life isn?t constrained by spinal cord injury. We come across a lot of remarkable people and, in Jane, I genuinely believe that she can achieve anything she wants to.?

Invented by the Israeli entrepreneur, Dr. Amit Goffer, who became a quadriplegic in 1998, ReWalk provides individuals with user-initiated mobility through the integration of a light wearable brace support, a computer-based control system and motion sensors. By a shift in the wearer?s balance, the sensors recognise a change in position and trigger the desired knee or hip movement to take a step forward, making ?walking? relatively easy for the user.

There are two models of the ReWalk ? the ?I? and ?P? model. The ?personal? or ?P? model is intended for daily use by individuals with lower-limb disabilities such as spinal cord injury (SCI) and spina bifida, following training with Cyclone. The ?I? model of the ReWalk is currently available for training and therapy purposes within ?institutions? such as an SCI centre or a dedicated medical facility.

Jane Sowerby and Matthew White Bionic suit helps Paralympic ski racer ‘ReWalk’ for the first time in nine years Cyclone Technologies is one of the UK?s leading rehabilitation and training specialists for individuals with severe walking impairments, and is the UK?s exclusive supplier of exoskeleton mobility solution, ReWalk. Cyclone is also a leading manufacturer of bespoke wheelchairs and boasts a purpose-built rehabilitation and training facility in Ottringham, East Yorkshire.
