Stocks edge lower as next fiscal showdown looms

NEW YORK (AP) ? Stock indexes turned lower Thursday afternoon after the Federal Reserve said its policymakers are split over how long to continue a bond-purchasing program intended to stimulate the economy.

The Dow Jones industrial average and the Standard & Poor's 500 index treaded water for much of the day, then dipped into the red after 2 p.m. Eastern, when the Fed released minutes from its December policy meeting.

As of 2:33 p.m. the Dow was off 27 points at 13,396. The Dow is coming off its biggest gain in more than a year and is still up 450 points this week.

The S&P 500 was down three points at 1,459 and the Nasdaq composite fell eight to 3,104.

At last month's meeting of the Federal Reserve's policymaking committee, the central bank said it would buy $85 billion of Treasury securities and mortgage-backed bonds on an open-ended basis, and also keep a benchmark interest rate near zero until the unemployment rates drops below 6.5 percent. The unemployment rate was 7.7 percent in November. The government reports the rate for December on Friday.

On Thursday, the Fed revealed a split among its members over how long to continue the bond purchases. Some of its 12 voting members thought they would continue through this year, while others thought they should be slowed or stopped before the end of 2013. Those governors were concerned that the continued bond purchases would destabilize the economy.

Prices of U.S. government bonds fell, sending their yields higher, after the minutes of the Fed's meeting were released. The yield on the benchmark 10-year Treasury note rose to 1.90 percent from 1.84 percent late Wednesday. That means investors are anticipating the Fed will slow its purchases of bonds.

The stock market opened on a weak note after retailers reported mixed holiday sales and as the prospect of a new budget battle in Congress loomed. UnitedHealth Group led the Dow lower. The stock fell $1.65 to $52.88 after analysts at Deutsche Bank and other firms cut their ratings on the stock.

"It's natural to relax a bit after such a huge day as yesterday," said Lawrence Creatura, who manages a small-company fund at Federated Investors.

The Dow soared 308 points Wednesday, its largest point gain since December 2011. The rally was ignited after lawmakers passed a bill to avoid a combination of government spending cuts and tax increases called the "fiscal cliff."

That deal gave the market a jump start into the new year. The Dow and the S&P 500 are already up more than 2 percent.

"We're off to a very strong start," Creatura said. "The dominant reason is the resolution of the fiscal cliff. But January is usually a strong month, as investors all shift money into the market at the same time. When the calendar flips, it's as if you're allowed to begin the race anew."

Economists had warned that the full force of the fiscal cliff could drag the country into a recession. The law passed late Tuesday night averted that outcome for now, but other fiscal squabbles are likely in the months ahead. Congress must raise the government's borrowing limit soon or be forced to choose between slashing spending or paying its debts.

Ross Stores surged 6 percent in early trading. The retailer said sales at stores open at least a year increased 11 percent during the holiday shopping season. Ross Stores rose $3.65 to $58.09.

Nordstom Inc. surged 2 percent after the department-store chain also reported strong holiday sales, especially in the South and Midwest. Nordstrom's stock was up $1.21 to $54.84.

Other retailers struggled during the holidays as shoppers held out for deep discounts.

Family Dollar Stores sank 12 percent after reporting earnings that fell short of analysts' projections. The company also forecast a weaker outlook for the current period and full year. Family Dollar's stock lost $7.25 to $56.75.

Among other stocks making big moves:

? Transocean jumped $3.33, or 7 percent, to $49.57. The owner of the oil rig that sank in the Gulf of Mexico in 2010 after an explosion killed 11 workers reached a $1.4 billion settlement with the Justice Department.

? Hormel Foods, known for making Spam and other meat products, said that it's buying Skippy, the country's No. 2 peanut butter brand, from Unilever for about $700 million. Hormel's stock jumped 5 percent, or $1.56, to $33.60.

The Art of Death (Group RP)

It's a lot like Angel Beats, but not exactly like it. So, I will still be putting it down as an Angel Beats when creating it.

Anyways, here's the information.

Please reserve the character and/or ask questions in the comments down below.

- P L O T -

A young adult male has just come into a form of Limbo that is created just for humans around his age group. Unfortunately, he has come to Limbo at a time when everything is starting to fall to ruins. Almost a year ago, animalistic demons began entering Limbo and devouring the people trapped there. Though the demons haven't caused too much damage to the surroundings in this Limbo, those who they have devoured are now permanently dead and are unable to reincarnate like anyone who passes on from Limbo.

The newly arrived male finds himself running in to a small group consisting of four people whom have chosen to risk their own future existences and fight off the demons. Their goal is to make sure that no one else will be get devoured by the demons before they are able to find their peace and move on. The group quickly takes him in in hopes that he will be able to help them get rid of as many demons as possible as well as help others stuck there come to find their peace and pass on.

- N O T E ( S ) -

* To pass on, the character must fulfill something that they missed out on before they died. (EX: If a character's biggest dream was to get married before they died, they must actually get married within Limbo, then they will pass on to be reincarnated.)

* If killed within Limbo, they will be regenerated almost automatically in their bed. This does not happen if they are killed/devoured by a demon. If they are killed/devoured by a demon, they will not regenerate or reincarnate ever again; thus causing them to disappear forever.

* If a character is injured, but not killed, then they must heal naturally, or another character can kill them so that they regenerate. But, if a character is wounded by a demon and dies hours, or even days later, then it is considered getting killed by a demon and they will disappear forever.

* The Limbo they are in looks like a college university. Thus, all characters must live within a dorm room and all characters must be between the ages of 18 and 25.

Can Skinny Models Undermine Your Dieting Goals?

Posting a picture like this on the fridge might seem like good motivation for weight loss. But scientists say it might instead inspire weight gain.

Posting a picture like this on the fridge might seem like good motivation for weight loss. But scientists say it might instead inspire weight gain.

The millions of Americans who make New Year's resolutions to lose weight often have pictures in mind.

They're pictures that have been repeatedly supplied by the health and beauty magazines at supermarket checkout lines. They feature skinny models in bikinis, or toned guys with six-pack-abs, and captions about how you could look like this by summer.

Some people go so far as to tape these pictures onto their refrigerators and cupboards. When they're tempted to reach for a cookie, they reason, the sight of that toned model might dissuade them from breaking their resolutions.

"There's one commercial for a cereal brand which actually targets women that want to lose weight," said Anne Klesse, a researcher at Tilburg University in the Netherlands. "And in this commercial, there's a woman who wants to fit in a very nice dress. And to make herself more motivated, she puts a picture of a skinny model wearing this dress on her fridge and on the vending machine."

The research to date on the effect of such models has been mixed. Some studies suggest such images lower the self-esteem of dieters, by giving them unrealistic goals. Others say they increase motivation by inspiring dieters about what's possible.

Klesse and her colleagues recently conducted an experiment to see what effect the skinny models had on dieters.

They recruited female volunteers who signed up for a weight-loss program and gave them diaries in which the volunteers could note down precisely what they ate and when ? a standard technique in weight-loss programs nowadays.

But half the volunteers got a diary that featured a skinny model on the cover and on every page. The other half got diaries with the neutral image of a logo.

The results were sobering.

"Those people that saw the diary without the model on top ? they were actually able to lose weight," Klesse said. "Surprisingly, the people that [had the diary with the model on it] were not able to lose weight, and even worse, they even slightly gained weight."

Klesse and her colleagues found that the volunteers in the two groups did about the same at the beginning of the study. But as the weight-loss program continued, the people who saw the skinny model every time they opened their diaries fell off the wagon. They started sneaking in snacks.

To guard against the possibility that there was something about the model apart from her skinniness that was driving the phenomenon, the researchers conducted a second experiment comparing the effects of diaries with the very skinny model and with that of diaries featuring the same model but altered to look like she was of average weight.

Again, the researchers found that it was the skinny model that caused dieters to gain weight.

"Being constantly exposed before and after eating, every time I am writing in my diary, I am reminded of a very skinny model, the idea comes up that it is not attainable for me," Klesse said.

In the study, the researchers said repeated exposure to models with unrealistic body sizes "changes the dieter's belief about the very attainability of a thinner self. Our findings reveal that the perception that a goal is unattainable demotivates dieters from investing effort in achieving the goal and causes them to disengage from the goal."

Multiplayer confirmed for Tomb Raider reboot - Video Games ... - Digit

Crystal Dynamics global brand director Karl Stewart has confirmed on Twitter that the Tomb Raider reboot will feature multiplayer and the details can be found in the latest issue of Official Xbox Magazine. The magazine, which is of course not officially available in India but subscribers in the US, will get their hands on it on the 8 January. So gamers will have to wait until then for the complete low down.

The Twitter post says, ?OK, so after all the speculation..yes it's true. http://www.oxmonline.com/our-next-issue-tomb-raider-gets-multiplayer ? Check out @OXM for all the info on @tombraider's new multiplayer?

The move for adding multiplayer to this franchise will arouse some fan hate as well as praise. In the past when Naughty Dog announced that Uncharted 2 would be getting Multiplayer, fans thought it would be an afterthought and wouldn?t hold much ground. But the multiplayer was a success. The same can be said for the Assassin?s Creed franchise when multiplayer was introduced.

At E3 2012, we also got a glimpse of God of War Ascension but to our surprise, it wasn?t the single player that was debuted, but the multiplayer. We have had some hands on time with the multiplayer beta of God of War and we must say, it is a refreshing change. So who knows, maybe the multiplayer of Tomb Raider wont disappoint us in the way that the multiplayer of Far Cry 3 did. But we?re just keeping our fingers crossed.

Recently, Crystal Dynamics releases Tomb Raider 'Guide to Survival' preview. It shows off some of Lara?s abilities and the weapons and equipment she will be able to wield in the game. You can take a look at the details of her guide to survival here.

Tomb Raider will hit store shelves on March 5, 2013 for the Xbox 3560 and the PS3. What do you think? Will the multiplayer of Tomb Raider rise or will it crash and burn? Let us know in the comments section below.
