It's sadly true that with many computer components, you get what you pay for. With PC cases, spending more money will usually get you more features, if ones that you'll probably be able to live without. A fine example of this is MSI's new $79.99 (list) case, the Barricade. It may be modest of styling, but it delivers the goods in all the build-centric ways you'd expect?and in a few you wouldn't. You can find more elegant and innovative cases in this same price range, but as far as basic functionality, the Barricade won't stand in your way.

The Barricade is, for all intents and purposes, a fairly standard mid-tower, measuring about 16.2 by 7.3 by 17.7 inches (HWD). With the exception of the windowed side panel and a silvery MSI logo on the front, the exterior is entirely black, in terms of both the steel of its skeleton, the flared plastic front and top panels, and the mesh that ornaments both. Its design is a bit on the Spartan side, but in any event you're getting more than the solid planes of metal that usually distinguish budget cases.

Open the side panel, however, and you'll be struck by a tidal wave of color. In a departure that's as drastic as it is rare, the motherboard tray isn't black?it's blue. And not a dark, subdued shade, either, but the color of the sky on a scorching summer day. The same hue is also used as an accent throughout the interior on the rear 120mm exhaust fan, the four 3.5-inch hard drive bay trays, and the tool-free retention mechanisms on the three 5.25-inch bays, but the blast of blue from the motherboard tray is shocking at first. Not that you'll notice much of it once you've installed your components, of course.

To help with that, you'll find cut into the tray a large hole for aiding in setting up an aftermarket CPU cooler, as well as a few additional holes for routing cables and wires into a channel beneath the tray. For the most part, these are on the narrow side, and two are blocked if you are using a full-size ATX motherboard, so you'll want to plan your cabling carefully. Also of note is that on the other side there is almost no extra space outside that channel to hold the cables, so you might not be able to shunt everything down there. You should also be prepared for a slightly tight squeeze between the bottom of an ATX motherboard and the power supply you hook up in the bottom-mounted bay. (For what it's worth, the tray is identical to that used in the Diablotek Abyss.)

Luckily, the Barricade's other elements are generally well laid out and implemented. The retention mechanism on the 5.25-inch bays is a clever one using springy screws that reduce the frustration and guesswork of installing optical drives or other devices. The seven expansion slots are of the traditional, simple, and effective one-screw-per-spacer style (not like the zany method used on MSI's previous inexpensive case, the Raptor). Rather than oriented front to back, the 3.5-inch drives insert side to side, which frees up some extra space around the motherboard and drive well area and keeps them out of the way of the two front 120mm intake fans. This? creates something of a traffic jam when connecting the SATA cables?there's so little room, you have to organize them carefully?but it's an acceptable way to go.

More surprising still on the Barricade are the two three-speed fan controllers that are found on the front of the top panel. These can be uncommon on even more expensive cases, too say nothing of models this affordable, so those who care about balancing their computer's cooling and noise are in for a treat. Other front-panel ports located nearby include the obligatory headphone and microphone, two USB 2.0, one USB 3.0, and an SD card reader. There's also a ridged depression in the top panel to support your electronic devices when they're connected to the computer; it's embossed with the words "Digital Cradle" in case there was any question.

Despite giving you decent value for your dollar, the Barricade is not perfect. In addition to the aforementioned quibbles, the mesh top panel, which doubles as a shield for two extra 120mm exhaust fans (which are not included), is mildly tricky to remove, and came off accidentally multiple times during our testing. And to take advantage of the USB 3.0 front-panel port, you need to run a cable through your computer, out the back, and then into a free port on your motherboard. This was a serviceable method in the days before the USB 3.0 header was standardized, but there's no satisfying excuse for it now. To make matters worse, the cable's passing through one of the two grommeted holes intended for routing liquid cooling piping out of the case makes it a solution that even robs you of a potentially useful feature.

You can't have it all with any sub-$100 case, naturally, but the MSI Barricade acquits itself admirably working within the necessary constraints. Models like the Thermaltake Dokker and the NZXT H2 are marginally more elegant in design and capabilities. But this case has everything it needs along with quite a few extras, and if you want your case to make a statement, the Barricade's bountiful blue will do it like practically nothing else could.

Netflix monthly vid streaming tops 1 billion hours

SAN FRANCISCO?? Netflix subscribers watched more than 1 billion hours of online video last month as the advent of high-speed Internet connections and high-powered mobile devices change people's viewing habits.

The milestone announced Tuesday by Netflix CEO Reed Hastings came a day after Citigroup analyst Mark Mahaney issued an upbeat report about the company's future.

The rising usage of Netflix's Internet video service may turn out to be a mixed blessing as the company phases out its DVD-by-mail rental service to focus on its goal of building a lucrative franchise in Internet-streamed video.

Netflix is trying to wean people off DVDs to save on mailing costs and reduce its investment on a format that it expects to become obsolete. Delivering Internet video is quicker and less expensive than discs, but the streaming selection isn't as extensive as what's available on DVDs. To compensate, Netflix has been spending tens of millions of dollars during the past two years to add more compelling titles.

Netflix's increasing popularity indicates that those efforts are resonating with subscribers. That's important because it helps validate a strategy that called for Netflix Inc. to invest heavily in video-licensing fees, even though the spending is expected to saddle the company with an annual loss this year ? the first time that has happened in a decade.

TV, movie studios worried
But Netflix's licensing bill could climb even higher, if TV and movie studios interpret the growing streaming viewership as a threat to the revenue they reap from advertising-supported entertainment bundled in cable-television packages.

One of the biggest reasons that Netflix's streaming service is catching on is because it costs just $8 per month to watch an unlimited amount of video without commercial interruptions. The average cable-TV subscription costs about 10 times more, with advertising interspersed with the programming on most channels.

Netflix now has 26.5 million worldwide subscribers to its streaming service, more than the 22.3 million TV subscribers at the leading cable provider, Comcast Corp. (Msnbc.com is a joint venture of Microsoft and NBCUniversal, a unit of Comcast.)

Cutting the cord
Hastings has tried to position Netflix as a supplement to cable-TV subscriptions, but that argument will become more difficult to make as Internet streaming cuts down the amount of time people spend watching traditional TV, Wedbush Securities analyst Michael Pachter said.

In the most extreme instances, some households have canceled their cable packages entirely ? a process known as "cutting the cord" ? and relied on a lower-cost alternatives such as Netflix or another service such as Hulu.

"Netflix is starting to cannibalize cable-TV viewership and it could start cannibalizing advertising, too," Pachter said. If that happens, he expects Netflix's licensing fees to rise even higher than the company has been anticipating as studios try to make up for the revenue they lose from cable providers and advertising-supported broadcasters.

The 1 billion hours of online viewing in June works out to a monthly average of about 38 hours per streaming subscriber. That's up from an estimated monthly average of 28 hours in December, based on the 2 billion hours of combined streaming activity that occurred during the final three months of last year. That was the most recent time that Netflix had quantified its streaming usage.

Mahaney's report said that more than one-third of Netflix's streaming subscribers watch about as many TV series as they do movies over the Internet.

That trend also could reinforce the perception that Netflix looms as a threat to the cable-TV industry.

Hastings, though, has insisted that Netflix helps drive more viewers to some series by making it easier for people to catch up on previous seasons. He believes the availability of the first four seasons of "Mad Men" in Netflix's streaming library, for instance, helped increase viewership for new episodes on AMC this past spring.

Less vulnerable because of Internet
Internet video appears to be making Netflix less vulnerable to seasonal shifts than it had been when most of its subscribers used the service to rent DVDs. The company used to experience a slowdown during the summer months when many subscribers were on vacation or spending more time outside to take advantage of the longer days.

Breaking through 1 billion streaming hours in June suggests that pattern is changing now that most subscribers can watch a movie or TV show on the service anywhere they want at any time they want, as long as they have a device with an Internet connection.

As of March 31, Netflix had just 2.7 million customers who subscribed only to the DVD rental plan. About 19.1 million are streaming-only customers and the remaining 7.4 million get both.

Mahaney's report estimated that 35 percent of iPad owners watched a Netflix-delivered video in June, up from 30 percent in September. Netflix consistently ranks among the 20 most downloaded applications on the iPad.

As more Netflix subscribers embrace streaming, Mahaney expects the rate of customer cancellations to decline and the positive word-of-mouth to win over more households, especially those that own iPads and other tablet computers. He predicts Netflix's stock could rebound back to $130.

Pachter believes his fears about Netflix having to pay even higher licensing fees will pan out, forcing the company to either raise its prices or shoulder more losses.

The HP LaserJet Enterprise 500 Color Printer M551dn ($899 direct) printed out our business applications suite at a near-record clip for a color laser, and its output quality is above average, making it suitable for any standard business need, including printing out basic marketing materials. This well-rounded printer (which also has a fairly low cost per printed page) is an easy pick as an Editors' Choice workhorse color printer for a smallish business with medium to heavy-duty printing needs.

The M551dn measures 15.8 by 20.2 by 19.8 inches (HWD), larger than you?d want to share a desk with, and weighs 76 pounds, so it is best to use two people to move it. Controls on the front panel next to the small, color LCD are minimal: Buttons for Home, OK, Cancel, and Help. The display?s color is used primarily to show ink cartridge levels.

Standard paper capacity is 600 sheets, split between a 500-sheet main tray and a 100-sheet multipurpose feeder. The printer comes with an automatic duplexer for printing on both sides of a sheet of paper. (A version without the duplexer, the M551n, is available from HP for $699.) An optional 500-sheet paper tray ($319 direct) is available, for a maximum paper capacity of 1,100 sheets. The M551xh ($1,399 direct) adds the second 500-sheet tray as standard, plus an encrypted 250-GB hard drive.

The M551DN offers USB and Ethernet connectivity. I tested it over an Ethernet connection using a computer running Windows Vista.

Print Speed

I timed the M551DN on our business applications suite (using QualityLogic's hardware and software for timing), at an effective 9.0 pages per minute (ppm). That's a bit short of our record (9.5 ppm) for a color laser, and a very good speed considering its 33 page-per-minute rated speed for both color and black-and-white printing that?s based on printing text documents without graphics or photos?our test suite includes text pages, graphics pages, and pages with mixed content.

The Editors' Choice Xerox Phaser 6280DN ($649 direct, 4 stars), with a rated speed of 31 pages per minute for monochrome and 26 for color, took more than twice as long to finish the same tests, at an effective 4.5 ppm, while we timed the OKI C610DN ($789 list, 4 stars), rated at 34 pages per minute for monochrome and 32 for color printing, at an effective 6.7 ppm.

Output Quality

The M551DN?s overall output quality is above average, thanks to very good graphics and photo quality. Text quality is typical for a laser, which is to say good enough for any business use short of demanding desktop publishing applications that use very small fonts.

With graphics, colors were bright and looked reasonably true. Some black backgrounds weren?t quite as dark as I would have liked, and some very thin colored lines against black backgrounds could have been sharper, but there were no other issues worth mentioning. The graphics are fine for printing out PowerPoint presentations, and I?d feel comfortable handing the output out to clients or colleagues I was seeking to impress.

Photo quality was slightly above par. Colors looked slightly off in a couple of prints, but most approached true photo quality. Taken together, the text, graphics, and photos should be suitable for simple marketing materials like handouts or trifold brochures, or for real estate handouts showing photos of properties.

Running Costs

The M551DN has reasonably low running costs of 1.8 cents per monochrome page and 13 cents per color page. These trump the 2.8 cents per monochrome page and 13.9 cents of the Xerox 6280DN, while lagging the OKI C610's per-page costs of 1.5 and 10.9 cents per monochrome and color pages, respectively.

The HP M551DN offers a winning combination of fast speed, above-par output quality, and a reasonably low cost per page. It brings enough to the table to make it an Editors' Choice as a workhorse color printer for smaller offices with medium to heavy-duty printing demands. The OKI C610DN has lower running costs and better paper handling options, but is slower and lags on output quality.

At the end of 2011, the Editors' Choice Xerox Phaser 6280DN was officially discontinued, but remaining stock is still being sold by Xerox and various etailers at a considerable discount. Its output quality, particularly for text, is slightly better than the M551DN. Its running costs, however, are higher than the HP's, both standard and optional paper capacity is lower, and it took twice as long as the M551DN to print out our business applications suite. If output quality is paramount, the 6280DN may be a better choice, but the HP LaserJet Enterprise 500 Color Printer M551DN offers a much better balance between quality, speed, and running costs.?

KIEV, Ukraine (AP) ? Just like clockwork, Spain's "tiki taka" passing game tore Italy apart.

The World Cup champions controlled the play Sunday in the European Championship final, as they usually do. They moved the ball up the field with short pass after short pass, as they usually do.

But, incredibly, they also managed to score a whopping four goals, something they don't usually do.

It all added up to a 4-0 win over Italy and a third straight major soccer title for Spain.

"We won being true to our playing style, and by moving the ball the we way we moved it we knew how to take charge of the match," said Spain goalkeeper Iker Casillas, the team's captain. "What we do is difficult but we make it look easy."

Casillas and Spain striker Fernando Torres also made their own histories. Torres became the first man to score in two European Championship finals, and Casillas played in his record 100th victory in international soccer.

Spain's other goals on Sunday at the Olympic Stadium came from David Silva, Jordi Alba and Juan Mata.

"We were superior to Italy," said midfielder Xavi Hernandez, perhaps Spain's most influential player over the last four years. "We played a complete game and perhaps the best of the entire European Championship. We made history."

Four years ago at Euro 2008, Spain ended a 44-year drought of major titles, beating Germany 1-0 in the final to start a run that has been unmatched by any other team in history.

Although they lost to the United States in the semifinals of the Confederations Cup in 2009, snapping a record 15-game winning streak, the Spanish have been nearly impossible to beat in competitive matches.

A year after that game against the Americans, Spain opened the 2010 World Cup with a loss to Switzerland. But they then went on a tear, winning their next six games to finally claim a World Cup title and undoubtedly shed for good the "underachiever" tag.

In all that time since Euro 2008, Spain has won with flair, using its short passing game ? dubbed "tiki taka" by the Spanish media and adopted by the team ? to dazzle scrambling opponents.

"Tonight, there was no contest," Italy goalkeeper Gianluigi Buffon said. "They were too superior, so the bitterness at losing this final is only relative."

Against Italy, Spain was the favorite, but was also primed to be beaten after being held to a 1-1 draw by the Italians in their opening Group C match. Spain, which has been experimenting with a lineup that excludes a recognized striker, needed a penalty shootout to reach the final after a 0-0 tie with Portugal in the semifinals.

"They've been playing at a very high level for years," Italy coach Cesare Prandelli said. "And even though they didn't use any traditional striker, they were able to give weight to their attack."

The controversial lineup, which Spain coach Vicente del Bosque again employed on Sunday, is akin to playing in the Super Bowl without a running back. Sure, you can still score touchdowns, but you give up on the chance for a game-breaking play.

Still, the midfielders and the defenders got the job done in the first half. Silva headed in a high shot in the 14th minute off a pass from Cesc Fabregas. And Alba added another in the 41st, picking up a beautiful through ball from Xavi and shooting past Buffon.

"The game was ours after the first goal, but the truth is that we played one heck of a game," Fabregas said.

Italy's task was tough enough with 11 players, and it became impossible with only 10 after the 64th minute. All its substitutes were used when midfielder Thiago Motta, who had only been on the field for seven minutes, was taken off with an injury.

Torres, who came on for Fabregas in the 75th minute, then added the third goal with a relatively easy finish and Mata really put the game away in the 88th, knocking in a pass from Torres.

"The second goal by Jordi hurt them, and then the third finished them off," said Casillas, who made a point-blank save on a shot from Antonio Di Natale at the start of the second half and twice tipped crosses out of danger just before the Italians could get their heads to the ball.

With every save, and of course with every goal, the huge group of Spain supporters cheered and screamed. The red-shirted fans dominated one corner of the stadium, filling up more than six sections of the Olympic Stadium. On the opposite side, the blue-clad Italians were far outnumbered, with dozens of empty yellow seats poking through the mass of supporters.

Also in the stands were several heads of state. Italian Premier Mario Monti, along with other EU leaders, had said they would not travel to Ukraine for the tournament because of the politically tainted jailing of former Prime Minister Yulia Tymoshenko. But that didn't stop him from attending the final in Kiev.

Spanish Prime Minister Mariano Rajoy also attended the match, and got to watch as his players celebrated with confetti and fireworks when they lifted yet another major trophy.

"I don't believe it," said Alba, who has played only nine matches for Spain, "but little by little it is sinking in."

Palfrey ends Cuba-Florida swim amid strong current

KEY WEST, Fla. (AP) ? Endurance swimmer Penny Palfrey has abandoned her effort to become the first woman to swim unassisted from Cuba to the Florida Keys, ending her odyssey after almost 41 hours in the water and about three quarters of the way through the more than 100-mile swim, her support team said early Sunday.

Andrea Woodburn, one of the team members, said by phone that the British-born Australian marathon swimmer halted her effort around midnight about 26 miles south of Key West because of a strong ocean current working against her.

"She is fine," Woodburn said from Florida's Key West, without giving further details on Palfrey's condition. Woodburn said she had been in contact with Palfrey's boat and was told the swimmer had to get out of the water when she encountered the too-strong current in the treacherous Florida Straits.

The waters in the area are notorious for fickle ocean currents, including the powerful Gulf Stream. But further details of whether she had encountered the Gulf Stream or a side eddy of that current or some other were not immediately available.

Earlier in the day, Palfrey had been swimming steady and strong and reported no physical complaints other than jellyfish stings more than halfway into the swim, according to her support crew.

At about 8:30 p.m. EDT (0030 GMT) roughly 37.5 hours into the swim, the 49-year-old grandmother was 76 miles (122.31 kilometers) from her starting point at a marina in the Cuban capital, according to her website's GPS tracking report. At the time she was positioned about 30 miles (61.15 kilometers) south, southwest of Key West.

Previously, her personal best was 67 miles (108 kilometers) when she swam between Little Cayman and Grand Cayman islands last year, according to Woodburn, part of her support team in the Keys.

Palfrey had reapplied sunscreen and grease to prevent chafing and said the water conditions had been excellent other than the extreme heat on the first two days of the swim. She even spotted a few hammerhead sharks and dolphin pods. Crew members said she was in full control of the effort at the time, instructing team members who are accompanying her on kayaks and a catamaran as she kept up a torrid pace.

She is "physically and mentally strong," Woodburn said on Saturday.

Hours earlier, Woodburn had said the conditions appeared ideal with bathwater-warm waters reported to be calm as the swimmer took aim for the Florida Keys. And the 20-year veteran of distance swimming has been no stranger to jellyfish stings, which forced her to abort two past swims in Hawaii.

Palfrey set off from Havana early Friday. A member of her crew was tweeting to fans, while a webpage updated her location every 10 minutes or so based on data from a GPS device worn by the swimmer.

The daunting effort has been commonly reported as a 103-mile (166-kilometer) swim, however the GPS coordinates suggest it is more like 107 miles (172 kilometer).

Multiple challenges loomed for Palfrey on her second day in the water Saturday, including the prospect of physical and mental fatigue and fending off dehydration, hypothermia and potentially dangerous marine life. At the rate she had been swimming, it had been estimated the crossing would have taken more than 56 hours to complete, slightly above her initial estimates. That would have put her on track for a Florida Keys' arrival sometime on Sunday if she had kept going.

Palfrey had been aiming for the record books to become the first woman to swim from Cuba to the Keys without the aid of a shark cage. Instead she had been relying on equipment that surrounded her with an electrical field to deter the predators. Her support team consisted of more than a dozen navigators, handlers and medical personnel escorting her on the 44-foot (13-meter) catamaran Sealuver.

Woodburn said that Palfrey was hydrated on the swim every half-hour with a liquid concoction containing electrolytes and carbohydrates.

Australian Susie Maroney made the crossing in 1997 at age 22, but with a shark cage. American Diana Nyad made two unsuccessful cageless attempts last year on either side of her 62nd birthday, but had to call them off due to a debilitating asthma attack and painful Portuguese man o' war stings. She has announced plans to try again this summer.

Nyad's twitter feed displayed several messages focused on Palfrey's effort.

"I'm sure our team will learn from her crossing," one tweet reported. "Just as, I'm sure, Penny's team has learned from Diana's attempts"

Palfrey began the swim in a regular sporting swimsuit, but put on a porous, non-buoyant Lycra bodysuit Friday night to provide cover down to the wrists and ankles to fend off jellyfish stings. But as the sun rose Saturday morning, she changed back to the sport swimsuit.
