It seems that the combination of Rooney Mara and David Fincher guarantees Oscar gold. The duo worked together on 2010's Academy Award-winning film "The Social Network" and immediately followed it up with an adaptation of Stieg Larsson's "The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo." The movie ended up making $226 million worldwide and earned Mara her first Oscar nomination. So it makes sense that the duo would team up yet again to work on adapting the story's sequel, "The Girl Who Played With Fire."
Turns out that Mara hasn't learned too much about that plan, though. MTV News caught up with Mara on the Oscar red carpet and asked her if she had heard of anything about adapting the next two "Millennium Trilogy" novels, and she didn't have much news to share.
"I don't know anything. I wish that I had the answers," she said. "You know, I hope that we get to make the other two, but I just don't know anything yet."
Though Mara and Fincher have seemed like an inseparable team thus far, there is always the chance that he won't be able to direct "The Girl Who Played With Fire" or "The Girl Who Kicked the Hornet's Nest." Up next he'll be working on the TV series "House of Cards," so he could end up being too busy with that to dedicate his time to the rest of the franchise. Mara said she would understand if he were unable to direct her through the rest of the series.
"Yeah, I would respect that. I mean, of course it would be very difficult, but I would understand that and I would respect that," she said.
Last we heard, Sony still plans to move forward on adapting "The Girl Who Plays With Fire." "['Dragon Tattoo'] continues to do strong business and nothing has changed with respect to development of the next book," a rep from Sony told Entertainment Weekly back in January. The film is apparently on target for a late 2013 release date, though someone better keep Mara in the loop on that.
Fincher isn't the only one who has a busy schedule coming up. Mara is attached to films helmed by two other big-time directors: Steven Soderbergh and Terrence Malick. Her take? "I feel very lucky," she said.
Both films — "The Bitter Pill" and "Lawless," respectively — are due out in theaters in 2013, but some images were leaked that seemed to show Mara shooting with Malick and her co-star Ryan Gosling for "Lawless." It seemed fair to ask whether that means production has already started on the movie, but Mara said filming won't start anytime soon.
"We haven't started that yet. That's not for a while," she said.

LOS ANGELES (AP) ? Meryl Streep might join the acting three-peat club with a third Academy Award. Jean Dujardin could become the first Frenchman to win best actor. Christopher Plummer is in line to become the oldest acting winner ever at 82.
And "The Artist" is favored to become the only silent movie to take the best-picture prize since the first Oscar ceremony 83 years ago.
Along with Streep, Hollywood's big night on Sunday has plenty of returning stars, too, with past Oscar winners and nominees such as George Clooney, Brad Pitt, Glenn Close, Michelle Williams and Nick Nolte in the running again.
The show also has a returning favorite as ringmaster: After an eight-year absence, Billy Crystal is back for his ninth time as host.
Because of a change in voting rules, the Oscars feature nine best-picture nominees for the first time, instead of the 10 they had the last two years.
Competing against "The Artist" for the top honor are Clooney's family drama "The Descendants"; the Deep South tale "The Help," featuring best-actress nominee Viola Davis and supporting-actress favorite Octavia Spencer; and the Paris adventure "Hugo," from director Martin Scorsese.
Also in the lineup: the romantic fantasy "Midnight in Paris," from writer-director Woody Allen; Pitt's baseball tale "Moneyball" and his family saga "The Tree of Life"; the World War I epic "War Horse," directed by Steven Spielberg; and Tom Hanks and Sandra Bullock's Sept. 11 story "Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close."

Spencer's a virtual lock for supporting actress, having dominated earlier film honors for her breakout role in "The Help" as a brash maid in 1960s Mississippi. The same holds true for Plummer, the front-runner for supporting actor for his role as an elderly widower who comes out as gay in "Beginners."
The lead-acting categories are where the drama lies. Best actress shapes up as a two-woman race between Davis as a courageous maid leading an effort to reveal the hardships of black housekeepers' lives in "The Help" and Streep as British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher in "The Iron Lady."
The record-holder with 17 acting nominations, Streep has won twice and would become only the fifth performer to receive three Oscars. Jack Nicholson, Ingrid Bergman and Walter Brennan all earned three, while Katharine Hepburn won four.
It's been almost three decades since Streep last received an Oscar, for 1982's "Sophie's Choice." Though she has the most acting nominations, she also has the most losses ? 14. Another loss would be her 13th in a row.
Best actor also looks like a two-person contest between Clooney as the distressed patriarch of a Hawaiian clan in "The Descendants" and Dujardin as a silent-era superstar whose career tanks as talking pictures take over in "The Artist."
It would be the second Oscar for Clooney, who won the supporting-actor prize for 2005's "Syriana." While French actresses have won before, among them Marion Cotillard and Juliette Binoche, Dujardin would be the first actor from France to receive an Oscar.
Dujardin was picked as best actor Saturday at the Spirit Awards honoring independent film, where "The Artist" ruled with four prizes, including best picture and director for Michel Hazanavicius, who is favored for the same trophy at the Oscars.
"The Artist" has dominated Hollywood honors this season, winning key prizes at the Golden Globes and awards shows held by the Directors, Producers and Screen Actors guilds.
"This means a lot, because it's a small movie. It's not expensive. We did it with small money," Hazanavicius said backstage at the Spirit Awards. "And it's black and white and silent."
If "The Artist" comes away with the best-picture trophy, it would be the first win for a silent film since the war story "Wings" was named outstanding picture at the inaugural Oscars in 1929.

Chemical clues on the formation of planetary systems
The study of the photospheric stellar abundances of the planet-host stars is the key to understanding how protoplanets form, as well as which protoplanetary clouds evolve planets and which do not. These studies, which have important implications for models of giant planet formation and evolution, also help us to investigate the internal and atmospheric structure and composition of extrasolar planets..
Theoretical studies suggest that C/O and Mg/Si, are the most important elemental ratios in determining the mineralogy of terrestrial planets, and they can give us information about the composition of these planets. The C/O ratio controls the distribution of Si among carbide and oxide species, while Mg/Si gives information on the silicate mineralogy. In 2010 Bond et al. (2010b) carried out the first numerical simulations of planet formation in which the chemical composition of the proto-planetary cloud was taken as an input parameter. Terrestrial planets were found to form in all the simulations with a wide variety of chemical compositions so these planets might be very different from the Earth.
Delgado Mena et al. (2010) have carried out the first detailed and uniform study of C, O, Mg and Si abundances for 61 stars with detected planets and 270 stars without detected planets from the homogeneous high-quality unbiased HARPS GTO sample. They found mineralogical ratios quite different from those in the Sun, showing that there is a wide variety of planetary systems which are unlike the Solar System. Many planetary-host stars present a Mg/Si value lower than 1, so their planets will have a high Si content to form species such as MgSiO3. This type of composition can have important implications for planetary processes like plate tectonics, atmospheric composition and volcanism.
'There could be billions of Earthlike planets in the Universe but a great majority of them may have a totally different internal and atmospheric structure. Building planets in chemically non-solar environments (which are very common in the Universe) may lead to the formation of strange worlds, very different from the Earth! The amount of radioactive and some refractory elements (especially Si) may have drastic implications for planetary processes such as plate tectonics and volcanic activity,' concludes Garik Israelian.
The latest numerical simulations have shown that a wide range of extrasolar terrestrial planet bulk compositions are likely to exist. Planets simulated as forming around stars with Mg/Si ratios less than 1 are found to be Mg-depleted (compared to the Earth), consisting of silicate species such as pyroxene and various types of feldspars. Planetary carbon abundances also vary in accordance with the host stars' C/O ratio. The predicted abundances are in keeping with observations of polluted white dwarfs (expected to have accreted their inner planets during their previous red giant stage).
'The observed variations in the key C/O and Mg/Si ratios for known planetary host stars implies that a wide variety of extrasolar terrestrial planet compositions are likely to exist, ranging from relatively "Earthlike" planets to those that are dominated by C, such as graphite and carbide phases (e.g. SiC, TiC),' Delgado Mena stresses.
The results of Delgado Mena et al. (2010) were used in this study as they are the first to determine the abundance of all of the required elements in a completely internally consistent manner, using high quality spectra and an identical approach for all stars and elements, for a large sample of both host and non-host stars.
The chemical and dynamical simulations were combined by assuming that each embryo retains the composition of its formation location and contributes the same composition to the simulated terrestrial planet. The innermost terrestrial planets (located within ?0.5 AU from the host star) contain a significant amount of the refractory elements Al and Ca (?47% of the planetary mass). Planets forming beyond ?0.5 AU from the host star contain steadily less Al and Ca with increasing distance. One planetary system, 55 Cnc, has a C/O ratio above 1 (C/O = 1.12). This system produced carbon-enriched "Earthlike" planets. All of the terrestrial planets considered in this work have compositions dominated by O, Fe, Mg and Si, most of these elements being delivered in the form of silicates or metals (in the case of iron). However, important differences between those planets forming in systems with C/O 0.8 (55Cnc) have been found.
'We are working hard to decrease abundance measurement errors and make the results of theoretical models and numerical simulations more reliable,' comments Gonzlez Hernndez, 'There is much work to be done'.

SAN FRANCISCO (AP) ? Netflix's Internet video service is adding more marquee attractions as it braces for a new competitive threat from cable-TV provider Comcast Corp.
As part of an effort to offer more exclusive material, Netflix locked up the right to show "The Artist" and other movies from The Weinstein Co. before the films are released to leading pay-TV channels such as Showtime and HBO.
Just a few hours after Tuesday's announcement about that multiyear deal, Comcast unveiled plans to undercut Netflix with a less expensive version of a service that will stream old TV series and movies to devices with high-speed Internet connections.
The Comcast service, called Xfinity Streampix, will be available this week to the company's subscribers. It will cost $5 per month, below Netflix's $8 monthly price for its Internet-streaming service. Some Comcast customers who pay for multiple services, including high-speed Internet access and phone, will get Streampix at no additional cost.
Although it appears Netflix's library is more extensive, Streampix could be good enough for some households looking to supplement their cable-TV service with a package that has on-demand video on computers and mobile devices.
That possibility apparently unnerved some investors who have long worried about Netflix losing its early lead in Internet video as more rivals enter the market. Netflix's stock lost $4.45, or 3.7 percent, to close Tuesday at $117.40.
Comcast, which is based in Philadelphia, will join two other large companies, Amazon.com Inc. and Wal-Mart Stores Inc., already offering video streaming services. Earlier this month, Verizon Communications Inc. announced that it is teaming up with Redbox's DVD rental-kiosk network to introduce an Internet video service later this year. The pricing for the Verizon-Redbox venture hasn't been disclosed.
Netflix, which is based in Los Gatos, Calif., also offers a DVD-by-mail rental service. But that has been losing millions of customers in recent months as the company has intensified its focus on the streaming service.
Netflix CEO Reed Hastings has said that he views cable TV as his company's biggest worry. So far, Hastings has identified Time Warner Inc.'s HBO channel as Netflix's toughest competition, but that could change if a cable provider such as Comcast can develop a compelling service.
By countering Netflix, Comcast hopes to hold on to customers, many of whom have been canceling their cable subscriptions to save money. Some of those former subscribers have been able to get their entertainment fixes from Netflix, whose Internet streaming service began this year with 21.7 million U.S. subscribers.
Comcast, by contrast, had 22.3 million video subscribers after losing 459,000 customers last year.
Based on the line-up included in Tuesday's announcement, Streampix will have much of the video already available on Netflix. The list of overlapping selections includes the past seasons of popular TV series such as "The Office" and "Lost" and older movies such as "Brokeback Mountain" and "The Big Lebowski."
Recently, Netflix has been trying to differentiate itself by buying the rights to more original series ? a strategy that has worked well for HBO and CBS Corp.'s Showtime.
The licensing agreement with Weinstein marks another step in Netflix's push to hone its competitive edge.
Getting the streaming rights to critically acclaimed fare such as "The Artist," which is nominated for 10 Academy Awards, also may help Netflix keep its subscribers happy as other popular selections disappear from the service's video library. Netflix will lose the rights to stream many movies from Walt Disney Co. and other studios when a three-year licensing deal with the Starz Entertainment channel expires next week.
The Weinstein agreement will give Netflix some movies within a year of their release in movie theaters. Besides "The Artist," the deal covers foreign-language movies, documentaries and other films in the Weinstein vault. Financial terms weren't disclosed.

1 of the world's top conferences in human-computer interaction, TEI 2012, is taking place at Queen's University
KINGSTON, ON One of the world's top conferences in human-computer interaction, TEI 2012, is taking place at Queen's University. Researchers from around the world are coming to Kingston to present the latest technology through talks, exhibits and demonstrations.
Some of the technology on display includes: a two-sided flexible TV screen that can be folded like paper; socially networked yoga mats; a glove for deaf-blind people that translates the hand-touch alphabet Lorm (a common form of communication used by deaf-blind people) into text; and a wearable system of sensors designed to improve posture among office workers by rewarding regular body movement with access to a video game during the workday.
The event is being organized by the Queen's Human Media Lab.

WHO Leading researchers from Microsoft Research, Siemens, Disney Research, MIT Media Lab, Carnegie Mellon University, Stanford, University of Tokyo and other top institutes and universities from around the world will be conducting interactive demonstrations, art works and presentations. Highlights include presentations by Steve Mann (University of Toronto) and Bill Buxton (Microsoft Research), and an interactive laser performance by Edwin van der Heide.
